Becker-inspired knife to be made... bad news.

Hi Fellow Beckerheads and guests.

I have a spare piece of 3/16"x2" 1095 steel that needs to become a knife.
I've decided to move to O-1 (closer to Ka-Bar's 1095CV, I bet) for my own designs, which leaves me with this lovely hunk of material to re-task.

Two possibilities are under consideration:

1) a full-handled camptweener variation using actual becker handles. With Full-size handles, there's enough room for just about a 3.75" blade. I could get creative with the blade shape - with the proportions weird, there's no reason to be a copycat on the blade shape. I could bolt the factory BK handles RIGHT ON - very appealing if I can get the steel holes to line up with the factory handle holes. Maybe even thin them out a bit.

2) A true 75% scale model Camptweener or Crewman to keep the pressure on Ka-Bar!! The original BK-2/3 is at 65%, and tho cute, its a bit small.
This would yield a blade length of 3.9" for a scaled BK2 or 4.125" for a scaled BK10. Option #2 is more work because the handles would have to be made by hand.

Total usable material length is 9.1".
For reference, The BK2 overall is ~10.7" (including estimated pommel extension)
The knife on the bottom was made from the other half of this stock. It measures 3.9" from grind plunge to tip, so that's about the blade size of a scaled BK2. (It's waiting for heat-treat.) There's enough room for another, but I have 2 more in the queue and 2 more planned before making another like that one.

What say you?
Vote and I'll give the results all the consideration they deserve before making my decision. :-)

Right now I'm imagining option #2 with a steep, deep clip point, but anything can happen!

(As a reminder, this is a one-off, and not for sale. I don't want to infringe on copyright/trademark issues commercially by doing something silly.)

If it were an option I would vote for aa bk2short. fullsize scales, full blade depth, same tip and belly, Very limited straight portion of the blade.
I can't wait to see the finished product, whatever it may be!

This is the best I could do with the tools I have, but you can see what i'm going for. Just pretend that the black line is not there.

That's awesome.
If there's a Magnum Camp, why not a Stubby Camp, right?

So far one vote each.
I love the idea of the scaled models, but the appeal of bolting on the becker handles to a slightly thinner piece of steel is super appealing. Note the only full-size BK I have is the 2, so it's a manly grip.

I thought the black stripe was part of the intended length.
That super-shorty is a BK-spike!

Once you are done you should make a competition on the Becker forum and give away one of your knives. It would be neat to see what other people think of using your knife and could be great feedback! :D

Maybe a passaround first to find out if they're even worth having!

Here's my initial thought on idea #1 (remember it's 3/16", not 1/4"). Not unlike Slapper's concept, except it drops down from the top instead of sweeping up from the bottom:

except imagine it shiny (it's only "stripped" if it was formerly dressed). I'd consider Micarta handles for this one just to sex it up, but I imagine Grivories are cheaper.

I sort of like the idea of doing something that could be reproduced from a factory blade if someone were so inclined. The flip side is it would be neat to make something BK-inspired that Ka-Bar is not producing at all. Hmm.... the debate continues.

@ Daizee - It looks like a mini razel/rambo4 lovechild... (Which is awesome btw.) Either version looks great.

There you go slapper

I actually intended it to be the length including the black bar like daizee thought, but this looks great too. thanks for the help.

I vote for this one, the other one, or any length in between.

raz-who?
oh... oh wow. Those are COOL.
I've inadvertantly gimp'd the tacti-razel. Huh.
Tho perhaps the BK3 is closer in spirit, if not in proportion.

No decision yet, but getting close. I'm digging the ideas.
I spent the evening over at my friend's place working on a couple other knives - had some weird behavior from that other knife in the first picture. We had to treat it three times and the result was still inconsistent. Turns out I have another piece of 1095 too, so I might actually make TWO from the ol' idea factory.

Grunt, 4.125" would be the 75% scale of the 10. I realize that's 1/8" over max carry length in many areas. If I do the 10, do you think it should fit in 4"? 73% would put it right on the money.

BTW, if anyone reading this thread has both a BK-2 AND a BK-10 that they could show side-by-side, facing the same direction, nicely aligned, that would help - I don't have a good comparision of the belly on the two blades.

It looks to me like the curve of the belly starts further down the blade, ends lower, and the clip is a straight cut from the spine which has no curve to it.

What a frustrating day.
It started with burned coffee this morning and ended with the discovery that the blade in the top pic (not the bk2) cracked during heat-treat. Didn't discover it until this evening.

Anyway, for this project I started laying out some steel and drilling some holes, but my phone crapped out and corrupted the SD card, so the pix are now in limbo. I guess THAT's the end of the frustrating day. I'm going to go eat ice-cream and hopefully won't end up wearing it.
