Becker inspired knives and sword

Hi All,
This is the thread for my Becker sword project. Some of you know the story, some not.

Well it seems that there was a thread in the Ka-Bar section about them making some swords. My first thought was "how cool would that be". I loved the look of the Ontario swords, but never actually held one, but having owned both several ka-bars, ontarios, and beckers, I knew there was a huge difference in quality at least between the Ontarios and Ka-bar/BK&T. Also, my favorite fixed blades are Beckers. I love their price, the availability with custom sheaths and that those micarta handles can be purchased quite easily.

So, I was thinking that I could put up a pic of my rendering of a Becker sword. I did. But, being a Beckerhead, I couldn't stop there. I eventually had to make a plan to make one. Being that I had my first knife inspired by the BK2, I decided to make improvements on that blade because my first knife sucked functionality wise.

I also asked Tooj over at the KA0bar section if ever they considered doing swords, and he said no because of the 14" limit on one of their grinding machines. This short sword has a 13.5 inch blade, 1/4" thick steel and a slightly larger handle. The Becker slabs won't fit on it. I guess if Ka-bar likes this short sword and if enough people like it, they can make it. Hell, my grinding skills suck, so these were also good for me to do since I have to practice on my skills.

The other blades are 10 inches and 6 inches respectively and the steel is 5160. I love 5160 and I prefer it over 1095CV, even though 1095(CV) is also one of my favorites.

I will be quiet now...so, let me know your ideas. These were done in the states so, I have to have these sent over to me, so, updates could be awhile, plus I have certifications to study for in my personal life.

I was waiting for this WIP thread :D

Thanks Wambo...I won't be able to get a vid up of this for awhile because it hasn't left the water jet place. I don't have a metal cutting band saw and I couldn't buy a personal use or a small vertical running one for a decent price. As far as I have seen here in Slovakia, they only have large industrial ones. The water jet saves some time...so please be patient! One of the swords is going to my Dad as a gift. One of the other knives will probably go to someone else (can't say who, yet) as a gift.

you should check out my " Becker knife ideas " thread. it produced some really great concepts

There are a couple of those designs that I like. The issue is, sometimes when it comes to several factors, one being availability of steel in certain sizes, this can limit a lot of things like kukris. The other is, well I like that 3 inch or so bushcrafter, with the full size becker handle. I even had a similar design myself. I made a mockup of it in real life with wood and it came out a little goofy. It was a 3 inch blade that overall was 10 inches because of the handle size. So, I ended up redesigning the handle and blade all together.

There are a lot of fantastic ideas and a lot of things others would buy, but in the end, it all comes down to preference and I love large blades and I decided that I should improve upon my first knife.

Also, I love Beckers, but the larger knives need a choil. It isn't about the length of the blade so much as its about controlling the center of gravity of the knife. If I can choke up and do that, there is much better control gained overall. At least thats the way I see it. I am not trying to bash anyone here, these are just my opinions.

Question for you all... I only bought enough G10 for 3 of the knives (6 total). Which colors of materials would you like to see on the other 3 knives? I only can work with Micarta or G10 for now (I have to get used to doing wood right). These will all likely have a very dark grey, almost charcoal like vinegar patina. Also, keep in mind that 3 of these are mine for testing, 2 are being given away (that will be announced later), and 1 will be for sale (no details since I don't have that kind of membership here.

2 swords - 1 for me and 1 to be given away
2 10 inch choppers to hopefully make the BK9 cry :D - 1 for me, 1 to be sold
2 6 inch blades - 1 for me, 1 to be given away

I have to make handles for 3 of these, so some input would be cool.

its cool. but the reason i like the bengal is because it pops but its your knives man i can only make suggestions.

I FINALLY got these in and I will be working on these. I am very busy with work, certs and home stuff, so be patient guys!

looking good.

another choice for handle material is Ramon G10

I recently had Keyman do my benchmade 275 in Ramon with a blue backspacer and it looks great
