(at the risk of being branded a heretic)

... a small ratchet pruner. That may sound dumb but moving through HEAVY brush, for every time I use a knife, I've probably used my pruners 50, maybe 100 times. Choppers are all well and good for saplings and largeish branches but have you ever tried to go through (on the trail of a deer or something) a serious brier patch (blackberry bushes, grape fines, weird pokey bushes, etc.)?

I've got a pruner that always feels like its on the verge of collapse. Need a better one.

Just thinking out loud.

Machete? Dunno how reasonable that is if you're tracking deer in terms of noise, but that's pretty much what they're for.

I can see his point. But they are faster, smaller, and require less energy to use, carry and maintain. I know a few folks that carry them, some have nice sheaths made up. I think it would be good to have, but I like KNIVES:D

for the money, Fiskars makes some good stuff...

you could even buy a full sized one and saw it down some. mmm?

i like their brush hook thing too. $20? it's amazing :>

Bladite

Get anvil pruners, not the double blade ones. 1/2" branches are no prob. Should be around $20. The double blade ( bypass pruners) are only for really small stuff.

A Bk-9 on my hip, with a Machete and Axe on my pack and I'm ready for any trail clearing that I'll need to do in my area.

Years ago I helped the Forest Service and Utah county blaze about 1 mile of the Boneville Shoreline trail. One day I used a pick and matock to cut the trail. The next day I was on clipper duty. Had my trusty 20" Sirupati Khukri from HI in my pack. Was sent into a grove of trees to clear a trail. There was no way I was going to cut threw it with clippers so I pulled out the Sirupati and went to town. It handled grass to 3" Limbs with ease. The Becker Patrol Machete was designed to fill that same roll. Hope it comes back some day.

Thought about that but no.

1. Machetes would be *way* louder to use.
2. They would work for the brittle, little stuff maybe but they require room to swing - not always practical in this situation
3. Not sure if anyone's ever tried macheteing through a blackberry bush but I suspect there would be much carnage and skin ripping. The blade will cut the bits of vine it hits but there are dozens of interconnected ones that would flail around like a cat-o-99-tails. I'd rather see that done than try to do it. :D

This is a tiny fraction of the sort of vegetation I'm talking about...

There's a deer five or six yards in front of me center of the picture.

Get some Bangalore blade's. Not silent or very cost efficient, nor even a knife...but lots of fun!

OK,
Hear me out.
I love me some Beckers..you guys might not see me around much. But I have been the proud owner of BLACKJACK Beckers, right on up till the present manufacture.
I think that a set of shears..might be a stretch for Ethan and Kabar...BUT, .....BUT...what if the new fantastic knife that we dont even know about yet...had...a steel shear blade, with lug, that carried in the sheath...and used a key type lug, through a hole in the blade.
I know this was done in the 80's on some lesser survival knives..but you know what..I like that kind of thing..if it works.
They always sold this stuff as "wire cutters"...I say we say that cutting wires VOIDS the warranty and make some cool part time brush shears.

Just so you know..I carry a pack of small shears in my B.O.B.
I think they have a TON of uses in the woods.

I've cleared before (couple months ago matter of fact) with loppers, clippers, shears whatever and have to say the machete out does it.. now with briarpatches etc you obviously need gloves but the machete man handles it, I don't like anything over 18" myself and prefer 14" golok, but the avid user will go 24" easy, I don't care for those though..
