I plan on going to the Kabar/Cut Co center with my son, in about a 2 weeks. I don't have any Becker knives yet, or many Kabar knives for that matter. I wanted to know a few things.....

-What are your favorite Becker models? When I say that, I mean the knives you seem to pick up more often. I'll tell you now, I am buying these knives for bush-craft use.

-Do any of you own the new Grass Machete? I saw it in the 2011 catalog, and I like the profile, but before I spend $70.00, I wanted to hear some opinions.

-How are the Beckers out of the box? Do I have to sharpen it any, or does it all depend?

Thank you. Once I get back from it, I'll post pictures. Thank you.

i think you'll find the bk 11 (the necker) or the bk 14 (eskabar) would make a great first knife for both you and your son

BK14 is a personal favorite - rides very comfortably in a front pocket.
Kabar US Navy Mk1 is very tempting - looks like an excellent GP/bushcraft blade.
i got to handle a grass machete prototype back in March and was not impressed.

What didn't you like about the machete?

BK2 has a loyal following around here. Stout as hell and not overly large.the people I took a sip of the look-aid last week and ordered one. Just got it today before work. Extremely sharp, not shaving sharp, but way better than a functional field sharp if that makes sense. This will be my fourth BK and I'm still very impressed with their ruggedness.

machete had a very odd double grind, it wasn't even and the knife just had a "wonky" feel overall.
I understand it was just a proto, but nothing about the pattern or execution set it apart from other blades that seem better built.
I could be wrong - they may have made significant improvements before the final release.

once you see them, you'll like them.

BK2 is a huge favorite with many here.

check out the MK-I for sure.

oh, and the Johnson potbelly - nice-ah :>

though, the magnum camp might thrill you too - and good i the kitchen...

BK2 all the way man. It's a heck of a thing.

Can you give more details about the type of bushcraft you will be doing?

The BK2 is a great place to start as a general bullet proof field knife and you certainly can't go wrong with the USMC Ka-Bar. The BK7, Ka-Bar Bowie and the JAB Potbelly would be a great next step up if you need bigger choppers. But they are also a consideration if you plan to keep these bigger knives on your hip for any lenght if time.

As an all around meduim/long term camp knife the Potbelly is a great choice. It chops like a big chopper and is nimble enough for things like tent pegs and finer work. The roomy sheath that can carry a good sized survival kit and it comes with a small backup knife that can skin and process game and do food prep and smaller camp chores.

My vote goes to the BK9. It has performed great at everything i have done with it. You can't make a short blade longer when you need one, but a good long blade can do most anything a short blade can, with a little more care.

Be sure to look at the Cutlass and Kukri machetes, they chop very well, and are an excellent value. Can't beat the Beckers for quality and value, just get the size you need.

I use my Mora clipper for all my bushcrafting needs, but after I got my Kabar USN MK1 I've been using that and it's working quite well for bushcrafting.

Lots of good suggestions, I'd just add that you'll know it when you feel it. See which one speaks to you.

Your Becker speaks to you?! I've spent a lot of time in the desert with my BK10 and it's never made a peep.the SAW on thus other hand was a chatty Cathy. Happy hunting, the right blade is all up to you.
