Becker knives

Hi everybody

I was surfing the net and for the first time noticed the knives of Becker. They seem rather nice and cheap to me, as I am looking for a practical knife to take on campings etc. I was thinking about the Howling rat or the S1, for comparison. Does anyone has any comments? And what is that strange steel they are using?

Thanks in advance

I have the BK7 & the BK9. One of the best values for those style of knives out there. The steel that they use is a steel that I think only Camillus uses to produce knives at their factory. Takes a great egde, easy to sharpen, and with a bit of care doesn't rust to badly. Coating also holds up well.

I own a Becket BK1 (Brute). I must say it's a good blade, even though I've been disappointed with a few things:

- the kydex sheath did not fit perfectly over the blade, thus letting the knife shake in it, and make some noise

- the grind was not very well finished, a bit too thick, and pretty uneven, but the edge was razor-like

- the handle has a nice shape, but I find it slippery...

Finally, I customized the knife a little. I grinded the blade in a flat grind, which lightens the whole thing and helps on wood penetration. I also took the scales off the handle and wrapped leather laces around it. This gives me a decent grip. I also made myself a leather sheath. The result is just what I wanted at first: a GREAT blade.

Honestly, I think Beckers are incredible blades for the price. Just don't expect a perfect finish.

Cheers,

David

I found the grind to be well done on my 7 and the 9. I have seen a couple that were slightly off, but not by much and not to the point that it would degrade how well it worked. I agree with Moine about the handles but I just used a bit of sandpaper on them to good effect. The sheath is so, so. Sturdy but it does have a rattle. Still very happy with them overall and would still recommend them at the price.

I don't think anyone comes close to the becker at the price range. Yep, there's rats and cold steels with rubber handles, cost twice the becker yet offer the same performance you'd get from BK's (if there's any difference, it's blade geometry).
And for 50 bucks, c'mon the sheath alone runs for more than half of that. I wouldn't expect the knives all perfect to the very last detail,, those are factory knives, not custom and can't/don't offer the close eye inspection that you'd find in Strider or whatever.

Do yourself a favor and BUY a Camillus/Becker BK7...You'll thank me for this sage advise later.:).

Or, a BK9 combat bowie. Can't go wrong with them. Looks like Hercules in steel!

The steel they use is 0170-6C which is a proprietary carbon steel. It's just your typical generic carbon steel that Becker (Camillus) has down to a science. Many other companies buy this steel from them and then rename it because they treat it so well. You won't find a better bargain at twice the price than Becker. You will need to iron the sheath to get it tight.

The previous posts are accurate, Becker will give you the best bang for the buck, but if you are really going to use it alot you should also consider the Rat...I have a BK-7 and a Swamp Rat, and when I need to work with one for more than an hour I only use the Rat. The Rats softer handle treats the hands much better, and the added weight helps going through the thicker stuff.

They are both good values but I keep the BK-7 in the truck for an emergency beater and the Rat as the main worker. Best to just get both!

Thanks everybody for the great tips and information. I think that i will buy both the Rat and the Becker I had in mind! Thanks again!
