Becker Necker and the Buck Paklite

A while back I bought a Buck Paklite and posted some pics here. The Buck is the same size and style as the Izula and the Becker Necker. My wife bought me a San Mai Becker for my B-day and I have been carrying it for the last couple weeks (alternating with the Buck). Some observations:

- I like them both for pocket carry, as opposed to neck or belt.

- Both take and keep an outstanding edge (the Buck is 420HC, a steel I like. The Becker is San Mai??).

- The Buck is infinitely more comfortable to hold, of the two, with its longer grip.

- The Buck is about $16 and the Becker is about $60 - 70.

- The Becker opens beer bottles, so I carry the Becker a little more!

The buck seems like a great value. The Becker's normal necker is quite a bit cheaper, more like double the cost of the buck not 3x. The hamon on your san mai becker is pretty groovy! I think koyote girl should make you a becker sheath :D

Good comparisons on the handles. That side by side shot is useful!

I like the flat grind better than hollow for a general purpose knife like these. Yet, hollow grinds get sharper easier and I can see where that would fit Buck's market better.

Your wife needs a cutting board, she'll lose a thumb chopping cauliflower like that ;)

Old speckled hen is the good stuff!

Wonder how hard it would be to cut a "bottle opener" into the back of the Buck? Shouldn't be too hard.

Great review, thanks! The Buck is on my short list. Lot of knife for the money.

Ken - Right on with K-girl sheath and the beer! My wife is not actually cutting, she's scraping!

How're the spines for use with a firesteel ???

Don't know yet! I'll find out and get back to you...

Yes, it is.

Good review on those two. Personally, I like the Becker, better. Although you may be right about the handles, I like the blade shape on the Becker far more than I like the recurve on the Buck. I don't really like sharpening recurves all that much.

DB - I like both of these knives. I like the blade on the Becker and wish it had the grip of the Buck (with a bottle opener!). I sharpen recurves on a Spyderco ceramic system, pretty easy...

Yeah, I like the bigger handle, too, but I still like the Becker blade. I don't use a Spyderco sharpener. I use flat stones, DMT's and DMT diafolds — or sandpaper for convex — along with a strop. If I were going to get a blade with a recurve, maybe like Mistwalker's new one, I would investigate the Spyderco ceramic system.

I have to admit though, that the Buck looks interesting, especially for that price.

I really like the Becker, but if a guy were on a tight budget, the Buck is great choice, IMHO. If you don't like recurves, there is a caper too..

I doubt anyone is on a tighter budget than I am (Social Security sucks).:grumpy:

You know, I actually think I like the recurved one better. For $16 I'm going to have to look into those (I'd find a way to sharpen it).
