This is a necker with the spray on Plasti Dip coating for the handle. It didn't get as thick as I would have liked it to be but it is better than bare metal feel that it had. Now to hopefully try it out as a skinner this weekend.

I like it. My Necker is one of my favorite small fixed blades. Can't decide between cord wrapping and dipping.

i love my Necker, it's an EDC for me. i have 6' of para cord wrap that works well. now you said that the coating was spray on, is that correct? if you could find or net order a can (rather than spray) then you might actually dip or use a brush for a thicker coating. anyway, good job, long live the Necker!

deserthawk - yeah it was the sprayon kind of plasti dip - all kind the local lowes had.

Will have to find something sturdier though - that stuff peeled off from putting it in the kydex sheath

anyone know of some heavy duty do it yourself coatings?

there is a pic of a green handled necker around - sweet looking :p

That green handled one is powder coated. I think that would be a great solution.
How do you like cutting with it since you stripped the blade coating off? I just got mine and the only thing I don't like is the coating seems to drag alot when slicing. Otherwise I'm really satisfied with it. I reprofiled the edge and it took an absolutely wicked sharp edge. I'm thinking about making a leather belt sheath since neck knives are a no-no here in the PRK.

I like the look of your rubber necker. I got a becker necker about a month ago and I wanted a fat handle for it to have a custom fit knife for whittling so I made one out of stabilized maple buckeye.
I stripped the coating with Nitromors and then sanded like a madman. I used black spacer material and stainless steel bolts and I also reshaped the choil and filled in the bottle opener space with a piece of brass. I hope the pictures show up.
Feel free to let me know what you think as this was my first custom project.:D

Wow!... that was my first ever knife mod.

Thanks for the blast from the past.

The handle on that one was always going to be too fat. :D

2 quick ideas to maybe get the stuff you already bought to work better if you have any left. First, maybe rough up the handle a bit to give the coating a bit more of something to grip onto. Second, mask off the part of the guard/handle that slides into the sheath and don't coat that. Look at the way the scales on Bushman5's stop well short of the actual blade. That's about the spot where I think you'll have to stop the coating.

Good luck! It really is a good idea, even if it didn't quite work out on the first try. I may give it a try on my Spyderco Mule Team knife that's waiting for me to pick it up at my apartment complex office. Experiment a bit and I'm sure you'll come up with something that works
