well, they went all shiny and 21st century and released as an app for iOS (iPad only)

suh-weet... give it a checkout at some point if you have iOS and cook, or like the JoC or Ethan in any regard :D

Can't believe nobody has posted this yet (or if you have and I missed it, sorry). The "Joy of Cooking" is our all time favorite cookbook, even before I met and we became close friends with Ethan. We still have four generations of Joy on the shelf, handed down by my grandmother and mother. Now, after 3 years of effort, they finally have a "Joy of Cooking" app for iPad. We just downloaded it last night and it is everything promised and more! www.joyofcookingapp.com

Congratulations, Ethan!!!!!

Subject: Introducing the new Joy of Cooking app for iPad!

After years of development and keeping our mouths shut, I am very pleased to announce to Beckerheads and all who love to cook that we have released a stunning, full-featured app for iOS (iPhone version is coming soon). The app is based on the text of the 75th Anniversary edition, released in 2006, but with so many changes, tweaks, and new ways of discovering information that we are tempted to think of it as an entirely new edition. My children John and Megan have been involved with every step of this three-year undertaking, and their attention to detail shows in the overall polish of the app and the usefulness of its feature set.... Truly a large step forward into JOY's digital publishing future! For more, here are some screenshots and a press release with a full list of the apps exciting features.

You can buy the app on the iTunes App Store or visit joyofcookingapp.com.

Cheers!
Ethan

The Joy of Cooking is the quintessential American cookbook. Or as the New York Times says, “The most popular cookbook in America.”
Now, it’s been retooled, re-thought, and re-imagined. The JOY app includes not just every one of the thousands of recipes and reference articles in the latest version of the book, but more: we added more than 700 recipe photos; expanded and reworked many of the recipes for the more expansive digital format; and pored over every line of text to adapt it for mobile use, enabling pre-set digital timers, smart shopping lists, and metric conversions, just to name a few of the app-only features.

Highlights:

• Thousands of recipes and reference materials cover everything from enchiladas to lemon meringue pie.
• All materials are included in the app. No internet access is required.
• Pre-set digital timers enable you to get each recipe just right.
• Let the app speak each step aloud so you can concentrate on cooking, rather than reading.
• Navigate each recipe with simple voice commands. No need to touch the screen with sticky fingers!
• Thousands of photos and illustrations leave nothing to interpretation.
• Built-in menu-maker allows you to create a menu and use it to navigate among recipes while you cook; you can even print it out or email it to your guests.
• JOY classic red bookmarks help you keep track of several recipes at once.
• The Favorites list lets you store recipes that you want to cook again and again.
• Shopping lists can be created easily from one or more recipes.
• The Sleep-Block feature prevents your iPad from sleeping when you just want to cook.
• A setting for Imperial or metric units automatically adapts the recipe to your preference.
• A built-in conversion calculator makes it easy to substitute just about anything. Want to know how many teaspoons are in a half-cup? That answer, and many others, is just a few taps away.
• A smart search page, with easy-to-set filters, gets you results fast.
• One-tap help overlays make the app’s features easy to discover.
• Email or print any recipe for easy reference when you don’t have the app.
• Easily share what you’re cooking via social media so your friends can try to keep up.
• A handy notes page on each recipe lets you file away your own customizations for later reference.

Awesome! Downloaded mine, now I can't wait to pick a recipe and try it out! Thanks Ethan.

The iPhone and android versions will come later.... About three months for the iPhone..... The team is pretty beat, happy but tired....... The original estimate for the time needed was six months..... If I remember correctly....... Worth the three year wait, and the work but, especially after the last sprint, tuckered out.......

Thanks for the kind words..... If you like it, shout it from the roof tops, please........

Please let us know if you find errors.......

All Best.....

E

Congrats on a very cool project. I know how hard John and Megan have worked on it. This will be huge.

On another note: my wife picked up the Joy of cooking canning and preserving book a few weeks ago. That info is total gold!! Love it. Thanks
