becker-oid khukris and such

Really great Bladite. You and I have such similar tastes in these knives. I have all of these but only have the latest gen. of the Machax and Brute, and of course all my sheaths are the newer kydex which I don't like so much. My favorites are the early Brute you have from Blackjack, and the nickel machax. I'm sure the grinds on those older Cincinnati ones were superior and wish I had snagged one of those way back when. Nice BK&T kukri; I also have the Reinhardt Combat kukri that was sold at the same time with the BK&T version.

So you did score a Magnum Camp after all? Sharp SOB ain't it?

Great collection and pics, thanks.

the combat kukri is neato - almost got one, but it's so similar to the one i had, that i shunned it :)

that magnum camp i've had since it came out... didn't score a "last one" yet, they think they still have one, as new/old stock, but can't find it - they're going to send me email about it next week.

it's pretty weird, even if they made a few dozen hundred of the older blackjack/becker stuff, you'd think you'd see more of it. a guy at a show wanted $100 for one of those beat up expoxy "sterile" numbers, i snickered a lot at him. it's not worth $40 if buying it, selling? eh, it's unique. $10,000 ;) maybe more!

Bladite, I checked my records, couldn't remember where I got my magnum camp in early 2005, and it _was_ Botach. :o The lady I spoke to went through all the Becker stuff they had and found it and told me it was the last one, and that they had had it for a while, so they may not have any left. ?

At a glance it looks identical to yours.

BTW, the cord wrap on your necker is impressive. Wish I could do that. I think that is about the best value in neck knives going, although for pure comfort in the hand (and a fatter profile on your chest) the CRKT Bear Claw is a good deal.

i got mine a while ago on some random deal, for $45 or so? lucky me. they're just GONE now.

the one i tried to get, over and over, other than an original fisk, was a nickel-phosphate thang, probably blackjack. very much like my first/oldest machax actually - when i got that, i was concerned on how to sharpen it, so i called becker knife and tool - and who should answer? ethan. heh. we had a fine little talk. he told me that he probably ground my knife himself, and to feel free to send it back to him for sharpening, anytime; also if i ever broke it, free replacement, but it would require a good story. funnier: his opiinion of the campion? "the only knife you need to field strip a buick" :>

sadly, i don't think i'll be sending ethan anything to sharpen, but i'll gladly buy more machax's of that generation if i can find them cheap and not rusted (like at a show, rusted, pitted, USED, $150? no)... also, if i can find a tac-tool of that era, or another brute or campanion. where ARE these things? must be hiding.

trivia: name the book that ethan maintains/edits? :>

Well Bladite, I hope you're happy. I got two Beckers in the mail now. You said you could buy the Micarta Scales seperately. Where?

LOL Andy, You, like me, are apparently easily influenced into acquiring blades. :D

Yea, well the good news is I'm in excellent company. LOL. You made me smile there Steve. And I think I got a good deal. I got both a BK7 and a BK10 for 93 dollars shipped. Probably gonna redo the handles and make them a sheath too. Right now any knife I buy, especially production knives like these, I can make and start selling a sheath for. So thats kinda good anyway.;)

oh, is that HOW you justify it? ;)

hey, i know a nice rusty piece of rebar that you'll want next, it's rare :)

for the scales, i'm told to call camillus directly and/or their website... about $20 a pair - one of their best sellers. actually, i think it might be a good time to do it... last i heard they had a worker/strike thing going on?

You said something about people removing the epoxy coating. What did they do this with?

the new black stuff isn't epoxy/baked-on... it's plastic like spray on, yes?

i've heard they used acetone, and it kinda gets soft and then scrubs off. perhaps paint thinner.

if you search for "becker" and "remove" and/or "coating" or something like that... a few people have posted pictures, and said exactly what they did in the camillus area - i'm considering doing it to make a naked becker-necker - very sharp looking. maybe i'll do it to a spare "new" becker of some other model, but i don't mind the coating so much, as it keeps the rust mostly at bay.

apparently body sweat on a necker is enough to cause a lot of the coating to come off anyway, and people just prefer it naked, to then put on very nice hardwood grips, and other things. totally makes it another knife entirely.

I ordered two pair of the micarta scales made for the Extreme and retrofitted them to a BK7 Desert and a Companion. They really make a nice difference. The lady I spoke to at Camillus knew exactly what I wanted and said they sell a ton of them. Far more than they do the knives.

That extreme BK7 is nice with the S30V steel, but for the price I'll just stick with the stock Beckers and Rats and get a Busse if I want something that high-end. The regular 0170-6 steel is tough as hell IMO, and all mine are razor sharp. The grips are a great value though. Note that they won't fit the Brute or patrol machete or old BK&T kukri either IIRC, even though the esta-loc handles appear identical, because the tangs are thicker and the handle screws won't clear.

it's not like the screws are magic or anything... they could be ground, or other screws purchased that fit the nuts... homer despot should have a decent set of such machine screws... then again, camillus otter just sell them or throw them in too.
