what is a better buy and will last me longer through choping wood and what is a more durable combat/utility blade, witch one is all around made better, or are they kind of the same

I have several on the Swamp Rats and I'll say you will be hard pressed to find a better knife for the money. No experience with the becker, as in Camillus Becker Knife and Tool?

I don't own a Becker so I can't really compare the two but My Camptramp is great. I say go with swamprat.

The large Swamp Rat blades are differentially hardened with spring tempered backs so they are much tougher impact wise and with greater flexibility than the Beckers. The handles are also much more ergonomic and secure, though the Becker grips are much more cut and abrasion resistant.

The CU7 and Becker Bowie have thinner edges than the Camp Tramp and Battle Rat which gives them a slight cutting advantage, however the Swamp Rat blades have more edge sweep and curvature which brings them to the top in other types of cutting. The overall cutting ability is very similar as both have high flat grinds and similar edge angles.

The Swamp Rat blades are also much more blade hevay and thus more powerful on the chop, the index finger cutout keeps precision cutting ability still decently high. The military tip is also superior in durability and penetration on most materials than the swedged clip point on the two Beckers. The Cordura / Kydex sheaths are very similar for both.

The other Becker designs, Brute, Machax and such, have very thick and obtuse edges and overall low functionality.

Get the Swamp Rat. If, for no other reason than the fact that they are guaranteed for life. There are many other reasons, of course, but that is a good enough reason alone. :)

Swamp Rat Knife Works all the way!

Their warranty, steel and coating are top notch.

The Becker lines' scales are a bit too smooth (the Swamp Rat handles are smooth as well, but they feel like very stiff rubber and therefore they guarantee a secure grip on the knife) under wet conditions IMO and they just feel cheap.

I owned several Beckers and then I bought some Swamp Rats. I no longer own any Beckers. What does that tell you?

I own several Beckers (6 of 'em), but no Swamp Rats. What does THAT tell you?.:D

Jeez, Guys. All the man wants to know is whether he should spend double the money or not. I don't own either knife or I'd tell'em myself. (Secretly tho', it's hard for me to believe that the Swamp Rat is anywhere near *twice* as useful/durable as the Becker).

Value varies from person to person, so I won't go there. I can only tell you that in my personal experience the Swamp Rats feel better in my hand, perform very well - hold an edge, chop and slice, and penetrate better than the Beckers I owned. The Beckers were good knives, don't get me wrong, but the Swamp Rats are simply better in my opinion. Are they worth the extra money? You have to decide that for yourself.

In some respects the difference is that larger and more. For example; the chopping ability of the Camp Tramp as compared to the CU/7 or the increase in toughness due to the spring tempered spine. The slickness of the Becker grip is also a much larger factor, as is the overall ergonomics, though that is a very personal dependant aspect.

In regards to tip penetration and durability the Camp Tramp and Battle Rat will have advantages over the CU7 and Becker Bowie, but not as large as two to one. In most cutting aspects they are very similar except for rocking cuts on a flat surface as the Becker Bowie for example has no edge curvature so its performance gets gutted in that area far below two to one.

Chopping? Oh, that's the one I always forget to consider. You see, I own a really good hatchet. :p

Bah! Hatchets are no fun! My Battle Rat is so much more fun! :D

I have never used any of the Busse "lite" knives but I have used all of my Beckers and have been very satisfied with the product, the price, and I know that Will Fennel backs up his product, although I have not personally ever needed warranty service from Camillus.
Did I mention the price? C/U 7 for about $50.00
