I stopped in a knife shop the other day and they had a small becker collection of knives. They had a bk-2 bk-4 and bk -16 and a knife that had the bk-16 handle but a bigger broader blade that was between the 16 and 2. I think the person working called it a outdoorsman. Anyways anyone have one or a becker model number for it? Any input would be nice. Thanks.

It's not a Becker, but made by Cutco who owns Ka-Bar. And it is stainless steel.

I know Cutco owns KABAR but I hate it how they take their name and call it their own. And now their taking Ethan Becker's designs and not giving him any credit? Gross.

Not the case at all. The sales person is fouled up. The Outdoorsman is not represented as a Becker designed knife by Ka-bar.

Makes sence because it was a cutco store. They wanted $180 for it!!!! They were asking $130 for the bk-2 and I said you can get them for half that online and she sAid well I don't look on line and this is what we charge. I left

It was in the becker case and now that I think about it it did say cutco on the sheath. Thanks guys.
Update. I found it on the cutco website. It's listed as 440A steel also not 1095

My niece sold Cutco stuff for a while and tried to get me to buy one. I politely said no. The only Cutco knife I really like is the toxic green handled version of the USMC in stainless. It'd make a good, albeit expensive, dive knife. The price turned me away from it.

I'm sorry, but I'm not getting your point. Not being snarky here by any means. Kabar makes a whole bunch of knives.

I don't like how they call it a KABAR when it really isn't. It's a Cutco. And they're taking Ethan Becker's design and not giving him any credit.

I think what jmflem is trying to say is that even though its not being marketed as a becker design, it still looks so similar to ethans designs he should get some recognition for it. What I dont get is the higher price for a inferior steel (compared to the 16)....???

Yes that and that they're calling it a KA-BAR when it really isn't. It annoys me how they take KA-BAR, a highly respected name in the knife community with a great history and recognized for one of the best fighting knives ever made--the KA-BAR USMC--they take that name and put it on their overpriced cheapy knives to make them look better than they are. I know they have rights to that name since they own KA-BAR, but it's just a dumb marketing scheme and it annoys me. Maybe I'm overreacting but I do find it annoying.

So your presumption is what - that kabar ethan and cutco do not have clearly defined contracts with regard to intellectual property, compensation and copyright?

I'm sure it's a fine knife.
But it's not a Becker.
$180 is ridiculous.

That's two tweeners, an 11/14, and a Remora. You'd still have change for a decent brew.

Cut-co kitchen knives aren't really that bad...

I'll grant that the branding is a bit odd, given what normally carries the 'cutco' stamp.
However, 'Kabar' as a brand stamp does not mean ONLY 'usmc fighting knife', as that division makes a wide line of knives INCLUDING the Becker line-up.
And of course the prices are high at a factory store - they surely sell at MSRP.

I started a thread on this over at Kabar and a few cutco reps have shown up to post... Not sure how good a 440 knife would hold up to the work out a Becker gets but I think someone needs to get one out to the Becker gatherings for a test run...

Welcome to corporate America: CUTCO and Ka-Bar are all part of the same company, the knives are made in the same factory in Olean, N.Y. USA

Somebody posted a thread about this not too long ago on this website; try the Advanced Search button at the top of the page to find it.

I don't see the big controversy... it's made in the same factory, owned by the same company, earning paychecks for the same people. If you don't like it, don't buy it. Unless they truly just "stole" the handle design from Ethan without some sort of agreement or licensing (which seems unlikely)... what's the big deal?

Now there's an idea  Perhaps one of the Becker or Ka-Bar mods could place a strategic phone call? Side-by-side testing with a BK-16 would be fun.
