Becker pommel durability

So I've read here that the pommel and tang portions of Becker knives only have half to two thirds of the rockwell hardness of the blade in order to make them more durable. Makes sense to some degree but it leaves questions. If this is true how durable is the pommel end of the knife and what tasks can it be used for without deforming it? If the scenario of a child trapped in a car on a hot day occurs (and it just keeps happening because most parents are stupid) can you use it to break the window and get the door unlocked, or are modern car windows on the convex side too strong for such heroics to succeed?

No, the pommel on a Becker will most assuredly break car window glass. It's 1095 steel, so I am guessing you could hammer nails with it without worries of it breaking

Your pommel will do just fine. Passenger side windows and the glass in the back windsheild are made out of tempered glass. It shatters very easily, you could flick a screw driver in the right way and break it. The front windsheild is laminated glass, you will have some issues there.

Well that's good to know. Now if the matter rises and I'm the first to respond I won't need my tomahawk in tow.

To break tempered glass strike it in the corner of the window with as small of a surface area as you can.

Steel, tempered or not will definitely break glass. If you've ever broken a window with an object not designed specifically for glass breaking(I.e. a glass-breaker) , you're better off buying a hockey puck to throw through it. Seriously, your more likely to hurt your hand on the follow through. A spring loaded punch would be ideal.

I put the pommel on my bk2 through hell, and it will take it. While doing "extensive" testing on it, I pounded the bk2 into an old hardwood log like a stake, then pryed the log apart with it. I used a sledge hammer to poumd it in, and it flared slightly, but thats it. Bk2 did not flex while prying either.

i agree that anything metal will work. Many years ago when I was in high school my mother drove her Ranger off our bridge in the middle of the night. I just hapened to be up and outside so I saw it. I ran into the house and had someone call 911 while I ran out there. it was about a 10 foot drop to the water and the water was a few feet deep. my mom's truck was upside down. the roof was smashed in a little so the doors wouldnt open. I knew water was gonna get in and my mom was stuck upside down in her seat.belt. I frantically started to try to kick the window in but the damn thing would just flex. That's when I realized I was holding a 4-cell maglite--duh--one little smack and it shattered.

as to the pommel... probably not a great idea to hammer on it with a rock, or a hammr, or rebar, but you could, and yeah, you'd deform it some, but you know, not too horrible...

batoning with a stick/branch/log/moos? esp to drive the knife point into something? probably fine.

turns out Fallkniven had this cute demo of batoning an F1 into a small tree, and they laterally hitting the handle on the side opposite the edge, and shearing the tree. "guaranteed" hah.
