OK I'm sure this has been answered, but try as I might, I cannot find it. I know what the purpose of the thump ramp is on the Becker knives in practice, but somewhere I thought I remembered someone mentioning that it was a requirement for military designed blades? Or am I just crazy? Is it simply for grip placement?

Usually, fighting knives have a double edge, and a thumb ramp serves as a guard. Combat knives are usually designed as utility fighters, and the thumb ramp stuck for looks. FAIK

there's a ramp kit, so you can add ramps to anything :D

not really ;)

Can anyone say---fashion statement... They were real popular and they did not detract from function, soooooo.......

They can be quite functional if you use them correctly. They can be mighty tasty too.:D

I've seen some folks square their spine and use the front edge of the ramp to strike firesteels, or to make shavings.

I believe a hand/thumb stop was a requirement once for military nsn assignment. 1217s have them, so do bayonets.

No I'm not questioning why you put it on, I was just referring to something I'd heard in a different post regarding military use. Personally I'm indifferent on the ramp. I don't use it personally, but it doesn't hinder my use either. I keep mine, as it gives the knives a unique look from my others.

Thanks for the responses! Once I get something in my head it drives me nuts until I can figure it out.

I think they can be really useful for some applications, but can also get in the way for certain other tasks or grips. I'm glad the tweeners don't have ramps, and I would like it if the 7 came without one as well. Otherwise, I'm not too opinionated.

I would be fine if the 12 didn't have a ramp, but it's no big deal. Doesn't interfere with anything I want to do. I have 2 BRKT Bravo 1s and with them, I prefer the look with the ramp. Either way, though, it's no big deal.
