I’m just getting back into buckskinning after a 5 year hiatus and started looking for better equipment. One of the weak spots in my gear is a good, tough sheath knife. I’ve built and used my own for years, but never really trusted them for serious work batoning and such. I’ve actually broken a couple blades doing so and was not a big deal as I just whipped up another at the next workshop.

I’ve decided to stop screwing around with sub-par blades and get a real knife built to take the abuse. The BK-2 caught my eye as a great tool for chopping, batoning, and all sorts of heavy use. With a little modification, could even pass for a historical looking blade. Heavy choppers like the Hudson Bay Camp Knife come to mind when I look at the profile. I was thinking that after stripping the coating, a little forced patina, some nice curly maple scales, and a nice leather sheath, the BK2 could make for a very passable historical knife.

I plan on purchasing the blade next week and am gathering materials for the project. My question: can anyone give me the dimensions of the scales I would need to recreate the grivory grips out of wood, bone, or antler?

Thanks in advance

I have some ideas on a template for the scales for you and some pictures of a hudson bay camp knife (Condor) I just rehandled with birds eye maple. tonight I'll put some up.

The dimensions would be hard to just post without a blue print, the shape is hard to explain on each dimension, the best thing to do is wait until you get the BK2 and then take measurements yourself....

I'd probably go with a 6 inch long, 3 inch wide, 3/4 inch deep piece of wood for each handle. That would accommodate the initial tracing and allow you to sand down the depth of the handle dependent on any spacers you use.

So do I get a free set of handles for putting out or what ;)

Thanks for the replies!

OREGON FAL'ER: Cant wait to see the pics!

Flexxx: Yeah, I'll wait until I have the knife in hand before I start cutting the scales. I'd just like to have the raw matierials ready to go or at least on-route.

Obsessis: Thanks for the measurements. Lets see how my scales turn out before we make any rash decisions there. Depending on how shakey my hands are that day, you may want to throw them at me more then put them on your knife! :D

I think it has a historical look to it, don't you?

I like it. I did a chopping head to head with the Condor hudson bay and the BK9. No b.s. I think the BK 9 is much easier to hold onto in a pinch grip at any position on the handle. Now in all fairness The condor isn't finished yet.
I plan on putting it in it's own thread. I just love that wood.
The knife is a beast though, Oh and the factory grind wasn't even on both sides.

the grid size is 1"x1" square so 2"x6"x1/2" piece of wood is big enough to create an exact duplicate.

@ JV3, I remember seeing a post that you added dye to some micarta handles.

I was thinking about doing my BK's black and was wondering how you did it?

One other question, does it wear off or stain your hands with hard use?

Thanks

yup, probably my post. all my esee scales are black (except for the orange g10 esee-4).

i used rit fabric dye. heat up 5 or so cups of water (coffee sipping hot, doesn't have to be boiling) and pour about 1/4 cup of dye. mix it all in and soak the scales for a few minutes then rinse thoroughly with cold water.

depending on the micarta you might have to do it a few times to get it really black (like my bk-11 scales). on the esee scales with lining (especially the izula) watch that you don't get the water too hot or else the glue will soften up and the lining will start to peel away.

it won't wear off or stain your hands. it's going to be permanently there unless you sand off the micarta. i have a bunch of white socks that i dye'd black and it's still holding up great with repeated washings. my non-black clothes didn't get stained from the black socks either.

That's pretty cool, man. I am not too big on colored handles, but definitely see a use for hunter/safety orange if it's going to be a campsite knife.

I'm just curious on the thickness the one posted is 1/2" are the other styles also 1/2"?

Yes, they are the same thickness and can be placed on all knives of size from the BKT lineup. The only thing that changes the handle thickness is the handle stock thickness.
