Just saw a Becker Tac Tool in a pawn shop. Looked new/unused. Price $179. Huh??

Tomars has them for under $100. Are there any rare varieties or anything.? This one included a "Camillus" marking.

Here is some interesting info:
The BK-3 was designed by John Benner 30 plus years ago. He gave the design to Ethan. John was the Cincinnati PD SWAT leader and Ethan was living in Cincinnati starting BK & T. They were and still are good friends. (although the insults make it hard to tell)
Fast forward: John is retired and owns TDI (Tactical Defense Institute). Both TDI and Becker Knife and Tool are under the KA-BAR family roof. Small world.
The BK-3 was designed as a lightweight, personal carry, entry tool for SWAT, Fire and Military use. It takes a tremendous amount of abuse. See Moose's video on the Marysville's FD dismanteling a Dodge Omni with a BK-3.
I'm biased but I think you will do fine with the BK-3.
Hope this helps.

Best Regards,

Paul Tsujimoto

While the Camillus ones are rare, sounds like that one is already marked up to about what anyone would be able to get for it (personally I wouldn't pay that much for one, but I guess some might). So if you were thinking about buying it to make a buck, I would pass. But if you really like that model compared to the Ka-Bar one then I guess go for it.

Personally, I wouldn't buy any Camillus product - had a BK-7 Camillus and I sold it. Of course, YMMV.

The reason I posted, though, is to pass along a BK-3 comment or two. As you know it's not the first choice for a chopper but I'm finding it more and more useful as an all-around, beater blade for woods bumming as time passes. It can be used for chopping, digging, cutting, prying, hammering, etc. In other words, just about everything you may want to do outdoors without having to worry too much, about damage to the knife, (to be used in conjunction with a smaller knife, or several, of course :D ). It's also a very convenient length (it just fits into my day bag and no more - my BK-4s and 9 are just a bit too long.)

I have previously read that it's not a good bush blade and I may have agreed, at one point, but I've since changed my mind. Just thought I'd 'fess up.

there's nothing special about the Camillus model compared to the KaBar version... no warranty either.

now, there's a few Camillus items that would be handy, as they are also out of production, eh? but the same-as in production stuff, barring the BK9 (it's thicker if you like that kinda thing), well...

I'd leave that for a collector and order from Tomar's if you really want one.

Or me. :D

I like em. Tougher, more compact and easy to transport tool, you'd be hard pressed to find.

Thanks everyone..I really did not "want"one and certainly was not looking for one but there it was! :-) Maybe I'll go back to the store with a copy of Tomars website and see if they will let it go for Tomar's price?? Might be useful in Tennessee in a bit over one month? Just thinking out loud here!

I didn't know pawn shops have a price match guarantee...

go for it - worst that happens is the guy tells you no -- or maybe yes, and then you're "stuck" with it.
