Has anyone used (or considered using) a Becker TacTool as their primary "survival" knife? I'm seriously considering replacing my Brute with one. It would seem to be a more than adequate for survival use. The only downside I can see would be the inabilty to dig, since the TacTool sports a chisel point. For me, the lack of a point would be moot, since I carry a folding trowel in my pack. I seem to recall hearing that a TacTool received high praise from Ron Hood. Anybody care to share their thoughts?

after seeing rons video he had nothing but good to say about the tactool, but i dont know if there is that great a jump from the brute to the tactool, and karen did use it to dig a lot for food etc. so it is certainly an adequate tool.

Brian Jones will surely come on here and sing it's praises. They used it for LOTS of things on a trip, much to their surprise. It can chop, hack, dig, score, chisel, pry, and isn't there a hook there that yu can use to lift pot handles with too? Sounds like a good tool!

I bought one after Volume 11. FYI, You'd have to use a stick of dynamite to cause any damage to it!!!;)

I like it but must admit that something else usually gets the nod for outdoor use. However, it is a pretty decent dive tool if you wash it carefully. Some of my wreck diver friends like it for light salvage work.

The TacTool has a very poor design for general wood craft and preperation of small game. Could you use it for wildlife work? Yes of course you could, but you will be making life a lot more difficult on yourself.

It is like asking, could you survive with a cheap $5 Canadian Tire hatchet? Yes you can, but if instead you got yourself a quality hatchet like from Gransfors Bruks you will reduce the effort you need to do any specific task significantly. Why make life harder for yourself.

For such uses, from the Becker line, I would chose instead either the CU/7, Magnum Camp, or Patrol Machete depending on enviroment, and exact needs.

The TacTool is however a very sound design for hammering, prying and extremely abusive cutting due to the very shallow primary grind and very thick tip and main body.
