I know I'm a day to late to post this in the Jan trap challenge thread but I didn't want to discard it without posting. I had a bunch of snow and rain on my days off that kept me from setting the traps in the woods. I got kinda frustrated yesterday (last day of challenge) and decided to just set the two deadfalls behind my house. I set them at lunch time yesterday and got nothing last night. I went out this morning to check them and the Paiute was tripped, with a fuzzy little tail sticking out.

Here is the baited end of the trigger stick

Here is the trap set. I also stacked wood on top but forgot to take a pic.

Trap is dropped

Target animal was cleanly killed, no scratching in ground (that's a sign of needing more weight)

Sweet bro! I wanna see if mine would work but I need to get a hunting and trapping license first.

very cool

I don't understand this statement though

if there was no scratching why do you need to add weight?

scratching on the ground is a sign that the trap needs more weight.

dress out that tree rat, roll it in corn meal and pan fry with butter, onions, and raisins!

You misunderstand. If there was scratching then you need to add weight.
Since there was no scratching then the kill was clean.

GREAT POST!!!!

That is a big ass squirrel, 2lbs? Thats a good haul. Clean, quick and well done.

Congrats!!!!

Thanks guys, he's in the freezer now. I skinned him very carefully and have the skin scraped and drying right now. Gonna salt it and stick it in the freezer later tonight. I'm either gonna make a coyote lure out of him or use the skin to decorate my next bow. The tail will be turned into a matching set of bow string silencers like these.

Awesomeness on the trap there, MD 25v.

I wanted to try out the figure 4 out in my side yard (where my dogs won't be springing it), but realized I might get a neighbor's feline. Awesome to see your trap got something.

What's the squirrel recipe for this guy?

Well since you asked....
I need ten squirrels, cleaned and in the freezer by the end of the month. The beginning od next month I'm helping with a scouting weekend that includes a few primitive skills classes that I'll be helping with. I always teach trapping and game prep/cooking at these events and lately we have been cooking small game over a friction started campfire. So... this guy will be added to these (my last hunting trip) and are destined to be cooked over an open flame:D

Great post! That was pretty cool. I still have yet to practice any trap building. Just another thing to add to the to-do list :D

Outstanding work! In my neighborhood, I'd be too afraid of bagging a rogue kitty or something but that's great stuff.

That is awesome. We have the exact same thing planned for October. Course, it won't exactly be BSA sanctioned, but it will be for the older boys. They get to try their skills with nothing more than a knife, compass, and water bottle. They are more excited than I am!

Then we have the EXACT same thing planned. We have been doing this stuff for a few years. The parents decide on their own if they want their kids to take part. Some of the BSA rules are so ridiculous, but its their organization so we have to abide by the rules for the most part. Either way, I'm happy any time I have kids to teach, even better when the older kids teach stuff they just learned to the younger ones.

They're excited, huh? To be going out in the woods (with - *ahem* - a well-fed adult) with not much in the way of grub, and catching/gathering their own vittles? Hmmmmmm . . . better be on the lookout for any 'man-size' traps out there.

Our boys have a running joke in our Pack, about earning their 'Cannibalism' badge, if we don't bring enough food. :D :p

Md25v - I'm interested to hear how your little trip goes out there. Sounds like it'll be a blast.
