I want sdc

I want a fixed blade knife to carry occasionally...no knife laws in AZ. I am looking online at a Kabar with 5 1/4 blade and and a Becker with 5 1/2 blade KA-BK15. I know they are both Kabar, but is the Becker superior? Costs $40 for kabar, and $72 for Becker. Also wondering about other recommendations for brand as well as size. Have a few old fixed blades in perfect shape but haven't carried. Jax Teller, SOA, carries a Kabar but is a BIG one. Appreciate help...Thanks.
BTW I have a Puma Waidblatt but WAY too big, but I also have a White Hunter and a Bowie by Puma. Kinda worried about carrying a leather sheath...is nylon better?

9some days carry)

Moved from Traditional. Good luck with your questions.

Becker all the way. Kabar makes a great blade, I love mine. But the Beckers have a different vibe. They are designed to be used, lighter, and have better sheaths.

geez 5 1/2 fixed blade to walk around with? things are nuts out there in AZ.

Sounds like sanity to me. Let the folks who ain't gonna stab people carry whatever knife they want, since they ain't gonna do nothing wrong with it anyway.

OP:Can't go wrong with anything from Ka-Bar and I'm a huge fan of the Becker line. What models are you looking at?

If I needed a large fixed blade knife for self-defense, the Ka-Bar would be an excellent choice. But if I'm in that type of situation I'm going to attempt to shoot my attacker long before I resort to a knife. I don't know what I think about them as utility knives. I do believe they all have stick tangs, except for the Next-Gen and the D2 Extreme Fighting/Utility. The Beckers would be far superior for general-purpose stuff, and can be used to do all sorts of things that you shouldn't be doing with a knife, should the need arise.

I love kabar in general. You can't really go wrong with anything from kabar or kabar/Becker. You should check out tomars kabars for better pricing.

Agree about SD, especially in AZ where you don't need a permit to CC. The tang on the Ka-Bar USMC is a lot better than people give it credit for. Somewhere along the line people got it in their heads that anything besides a full-exposed tang was garbage. About the only thing I wouldn't do with one is do any serious batoning. I've split some smaller stuff with mine and it was fine but I don't find that to be all that necessary anyway. And of course I wouldn't pry with one either but I don't do that with any knife.

Ok and a wow.

Sometimes people give a definition and people respond outside of the parameters. Other times, the constraints are inaccurate.

Your constraint. No weight problem. The Ontario Afghan model 1/4 inch thick. If weight is a problem, then the Afghan model known as the Bushmaster model, just different thickness. If you will allow a slightly longer length, then hands down it will be the Ontario TFI which is my choice of an all around knife.

By and large the Becker models need a bit more sharpening at the beginning. The scales don't have the same good feel in my hands. The 15 doesn't, but it might in yours.

Ontario doesn't put out the best sheaths. However, short of buying an after market kydex, you can sew in or tack extra leather retaining straps with snaps, use 550 cord for restraints, wrap the sheaths in 550 cord, add firestarters and so forth. If you have a problem of an Ontario knife rattling in the sheath try putting part of a compressible earplug at the bottom of the sheath. Sometimes a plastic insert is used in the sheath. It will scratch the blade. You can try using some glue to affix it to the sheath. And people sometimes wonder why a sheath can cost as much as the knife!
