So, there I was. All alone, 90 ft from help, out in the hot Michigan sun. When, in a blink of an eye the perfect day went to hell. The wrench in my hand slipped off the bolt holding a freshly sharpened blade, sending my hand toward the shiny edge. The blood did flow as did the profanity (I even made up a few new phrases). So with the middle finger laying open like a Filet O Fish and blood running, I grabbed the base if my finger and squeezed the hell out of it, and ran for the house. I grabbed some paper towel to slow it down and headed out to the truck to get the first aid kid behind the seat. I was able to get the bleeding to slow to an acceptable level using direct pressure (a lot of pressure, ouch) and elevation. Then off to the ER for a 6 hour ordeal.

From the first aid kit I used a trauma pad, a roll of gauze and some tape. After it was all over I reflected on how useful that kit was, having everything at hand in one place. I was glad that when I packed it, supplies that would be used for serious bleeding or extreme trauma were on top. Everything else was buried some as you would have time to dig.

I am on the mend now, nursing 12 stitches with no serious tendon damage. Funny how much you actually use your middle finger, only to realize how much, when its wrapped and taped and any pressure from grabbing or lifting pulls on the stitches.

Who has kick ass First Aid kits? What's in 'em? Have you needed to use them?!

I have several (mostly in my work truck, provided by employer) but only use my "boo-boo bag" (bandages and neosporin). This makes me think about getting a kit together for serious stuff - one that I've packed myself, rather than off the shelf. Luckily have not needed one in my 50+ years....haven't had stitches (other than a couple surgeries) since I was 4. This is not to say that I don't need a kit, but until I read something of this nature, it's not at the forefront of my consciousness. Should be, considering the number of sharp items I carry and use daily. Thanks for the reminder....and best wishes for a speedy recovery. Now I gotta get a kit together...I think I just jinxed myself.

Mine is duct tape and vaseline. It's all I need.

Ok, I'll play for real. This is the latest picture I have of my FAK, and I'll explain what else I added also.

Bandaids, gloves, vaseline, coban, ace wrap, pills (anti-diarrhea, anti-histimine, claritin, ibuprofen, other pills I don't remember right off) Moleskin, suture removal kit, burn gel, eye saline, gauze (3 sizes), steri-strips.

Not pictured but has been added is 2x tampons, and 3x pads, and a tube of vaseline.

I have a basic FAK of the shelf full of band aids and whatnot but I've also added guaz, guaz pads, 2 triangular bandages, a couple compression bandages and a military field dressing

my kit has full first a aid and trauma gear, intubation kit , iv kit with fluids, full drug kit mostly cardiac type meds. , o2 sat monitor small o2 bottle with multipul delivery options needle cric, kit everything but a 12 lead monitor with defib capability actually! in a backpack type carry system about 65 pounds of gear lol beat that noobs!

I just carry a store bought hikers first aid kit , I added 12 water puro tabs , a few codiene tabs , and a lot more canvas band aids to. I ride a mountain bike to and from work , and everywhere else since I lost my license. Least that kit gives me some piece of mind that I can patch myself up if I have a spill.

Timely thread! I just assembled this one after the Spring Gathering at Mr. Becker's. Inside is a Walmart kit with assorted band aids, tape, pads and stuff. Then I added some heavier duty stuff like larger sterile bandages, iodine and other stuff. It now lives in my truck and I will hope I don't need it.:)

I'll get some pix of a few of mine with the morning light. Basically the same as everyone else. I built mine after Doc's (AverageIowaGuy) class at a gathering.

Moin. This goes with me mostly everywhere. Sits in the bottom of my EDC Moab10, so i'll have it at hand if i'm hiking, at the range, working or just goofing around.
Contents: Elastic bandage, Triangular bandage, burn compress, shears, tape, compress, a bunch of gauze, a ziplock baggie with bandaids, alcohol swabs and wound strips, my BK13 and surgical gloves.

I picked up a small but decently-stocked Adventure Medical FAK, added a Ritter Pocket Survival Pak, some gauze, burn pads, burn creme, survival blankets, a decent light, and a few other essentials. Thankfully, all we've used from it so far has been a couple aspirin, a couple antiseptic wipes, some antibacterial cream, and a boat-load of band-aids. The girls are still in the "band-aids make it feel better" phase. Plus, that's all I used the last two times my Beckers bit me. (Only seems to happen when I'm modding them anymore. Perhaps I'm finally growing careful in my knife use...)

I hope I never need to use most of the stuff in there, but I feel better having it and at least the basic knowledge to put it to use. Better to have and not need...

Hmm. I may need to replace the gloves, too.

Our home "first aid" is pretty much like tfields with a few tweaks. My wife is an obstetrics nurse and she used to work in emerge before that. Our kit is a large rubber made bin that can take care of most things (cuts, scrapes, burns, anything require stitches / staples, cardiac equipment, anything required to birth a baby / take care of anything afterwards).

There is still some stuff I want to add. I also wouldn't mind keeping a few liters of blood in the fridge

Yep, forgot the pictures, sorry. I'll get on it today after I drop my daughter off to daycare.
