Do we have any prospectors in the house? I'm gunna head out some time today with my pan and home made portable rig.

I'm picturing HS looking something like this:

"There's gold in them there hills. Yeeheehee!"

On a more serious note...I've always been interested in prospecting.
What kind of portable rig do you have HS?
Take some pics when you're out and about.
Hope you strike it rich!

"EUREKA! I'm rich I tells ya, rich! Yeeheehee!"

There are some free programs that put mine/prospect locations on top of google earth. While you might not be able to get to these locations because they could be on private land, it does give you a sense of what is in the area. You can also get state geologic maps for google earth from US geologic survey website, even layers that show mineral occurrences. With some basic knowledge of how/where gold occurs you an use technology to help pinpoint some good locations. Having the terrain on google earth makes it really easy to see what areas are accessible. Plus you can use GPS tracking apps on smartphones to put your entire hike on top of geologic maps on top of mineral occurrences on top of google earth terrain. Yeah,,,,, I've done a lot of geologic mapping and how technology can assist in making accurate maps. The gold is just the fun part of it.

I've always been a fan of the idea of prospecting and panning for gold. It calls to that kid in me who loves Louis L'amour novels and stories told by old men around campfires. But actually going out and hunting gold for real seems too much like work to me. But then, I'm a lazy bastard. :D

Good luck on the gold hunt, HS. Let's see some of those pretty flakes.
