Beckerhead cold weather woods wanderers, since this is such an active section of blade forums and it seems many enjoy the outdoors I need some advice. What boots do you wear in the winter when out abusing your beckers? I had a leaks in my Rocky's (second pair that have done that) and it really sucked on a two day hunt with soaked feet. I need about 1000 grams of insulation and waterproof (preferably breathable like gortex or similar) not more than 4.5lbs/pair. I am looking at the Irish Setters (gunflint 10") anyone try these or have another recommendation? Price not much of an issue if they last a few years. I need to get them tomorrow (more hunting planned soon). Thanks for the help.

I havent owned the Irish Setter Hunting boots, but I did have a pair of their work boots and they were built well and help up.

Danner pronghorns on the short list too, just never had a pair of Danners. reviews look pretty good though..

Danner makes the Cabela's Outfitter series of leather boots. Up to 2000 grams of Thinsulate, & Gore-Tex too. I have a pair of black Danner Ft. Lewis Go Devils boots, that i bought when i first joined the Dept, 24.6 yrs ago. They have been resoled 3x. Now, it cost more to resole them, IF you can find a place to do it at all, than for a new pair of high quality Danners. :thumbdn::thumbdn:

I just got a pair of Merrell boots. Not sure about their insulating properties, but they are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned.

Danners for sure. I have a pair of their Rainforest and a pair of Desert Acadia's with gore-tex. Both are made in the USA! And both are awesome boots that have held up well to abuse. I also have a pair of their Pronghorn Snake boots that I use during spring turkey season. I like them too. I recommend you try out different models, as some are built on different lasts, and see what you find most comfortable.

So the Danners are good? the thumbs down kind of through me for a loop...The only complaint I found was the model I am looking at is no longer made in the USA.

Unless I'm in the river wearing Merrel creek shoes, I'm always wearing Dr. Marten's industrial boots with wool socks, year round.

Yea I love Merrell hiking boots have 2 pairs (high/low) could not find much for cold weather hunting, my hikers are fine when walking but sitting still my feet get too cold.

Good to here they hold up most of the reviews I found were less than 6 months of ownership. Unfortunately they have outsourced some models.

I have a pair of Ecco boots that have held up well for about 18 months now. Made in Slovakia. Not as heavily insulated but durable and very comfortable.

another vote for Matterhorn -- 10" lace to toe, gortex lined and 400 gram insulated boot was the most comfortable I've ever worn.
danners tend to run a bit narrow, so order wider than normal.
I have a pair of the chinese built Danner Strykers and they're decent boots, but I like my altama combat boots better.

Irish Setter boots are made by Redwings.

If you can find some Belleville cold weather boots with removable liners you're in business. Takes a bit to break them in, but they are awesome boots.

I'm a big fan of the US made Redwings. Great boots for sure. Was being cheap last spring and bought a pair of Irish Setters after my second pair of Redwings got torn up and haven't been too happy with them. I just bought my first pair of Danners just to try something new and so far I'm impressed with them. They definitely run narrow like vik said, so watch for that.

Rocky Portlands are the only boot to touch my feet in the outdoors.

They make several variations, and I love em. If you don't like Rocky's, well, there always Chippewa's .

Thanks did not know Redwings made the Irish Setters, I used to like Red Wings but we had them as vendor for safety shoes a few years back and they brought a bunch of imports that fell apart pretty quick. I think I am leaning towards the Danners now. I have narrow foot so they should be good for me. I am going to have to pay the extra few bucks and buy them tomorrow will try on both but am on vacation and can't order them or i will be without boots for the next few days (just purged a bunch of stuff last year including my old spare pack boots that were too heavy for serious walking. My last pair of sorrels leaked too - no longer made in Canada and quality seemed to have gone south too. Some of the Red head boots that BPS carries look good but unsure who makes them. I was always happy with Rocky's until the last few pairs only held up for a season. Will put snow seal on the next pair right out of the box and re-apply as needed.

Thanks for the input everyone. After trying on a bunch of chit at several stores, I ended up with some cabelas branded Danners full leather outers, gortex lined, vibram soles, etc a bit heavier than what I wanted but they shouldn't rip or split. Comfy right out of the box and hopefully keep my feet dry and warm.
