Went out on my break and saw this praying mantis on my Jeep. I gently picked it up and then remembered I had my EsKabar inside. So, that's how this picture happened.

Anybody else have a weird Becker pic?

Yeah, couldn't figure out a way to classify this pic. I'm changing the title, though. This should be a cool thread.

Hey Rokclmb.....

I hope you nailed that sucker before he nailed you!........ I got hit by one of those and it was like a combination of grabbing a couple of live wires and getting hit by a cutting torch........ I rarely wear short sleeves in the woods anymore....LOL......

According to "The Wild Kratts" (my son's favorite tv show), mantises don't bite.

Also they are one of only a few insects that can turn their heads.

I liked the Wild Kratts. They were Zaboomafoo first. I'll have to get some pics, though bug season is winding down. Giant Cecropia and Luna moths here, as well as a vicious looking one called the Dobson Fly. Not surprisingly, the males with those huge mandibles don't bite....but the females with their much shorter ones do, and it hurts. This should surprise no one. Doesn't look anything like a fly, if you ask me:

Do you guys just find these prehistoric bugs in your backyard or do you have to look around to find them? I don't think i could sleep at night knowing these things were around.

There used to be mantis's where I live (central NY) but I haven't seen them in years. And when they were around they were pretty rare. I don't know maybe they flew away and migrated somewhere else?

Don't let me scare you, but you've got Dobson Flys in MN, friend. Their larvae are hellgrammites, which are great bass bait. But they bite, so you gotta be careful when yer collecting 'em.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! You serious? Never seen an insect that big in MN period. Water Beetles pushing what size maybe and huge moths but that's it that i an think of. Thanks for increasing my paranoia by 1,000,000%.;)

I found it barely alive on the side of a road. I saved it in a plastic bag until I got home then I stuck it in a jar with some nail polish remover. I recently got rid of it when I moved.

The following is from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_giant_hornet):
Thirty to forty people die in Japan every year after having been stung,[2][6] which makes the Japanese giant hornet the second most lethal animal in Japan after humans[7] (bears kill zero to five people[8] and venomous snakes kill five to ten people each year).
