I've been a longtime marital artist.. and spent a decent amount of time studying sayoc kali which is a martial art that deals primarily with knife fighting..
Anybody think becker should make trainers (non sharpened blanks) of there popukar offerings so that we those who train could do so with a knife similar to what they use in the bush?
I;d love a bk7 trainer... theres beena lonely night or 2 curled up under a poncho when a twig snaps not to far away and it feels pretty reassuring to wrap your hand around a good piece of steel.
Just my 2 cents.. any thoughts?

A good friend of mine has studied kali for many years. I had the pleasure of being able to sit in and observe a class, the knife training seems quite intense. Lots of kris and barong blade work, right? Cool stuff, all the movements have a very natural flow.

There can be.. my instructor used a variety of blades.. But generaly kept things within a size range that you might find yourself with.

should be pretty easy to cut an outline out of aluminum stock, just rounded?

course, the weight might be off... steel would be a little tougher, but a trainer wouldn't need heat treating or anything special, just a blank really.

send your beckers to me...my freehand sharpening skills will make it duller than any rubber knife :D

I would think that most times, in a woodland enviornment, wild game would be the natural enemy. For, 2 legged, yeah, a big chunk of steel in hand would be a good deterent, me thinks.

If I were to go with a BKT for a combat knive, me thinks the BK5 would be the choice. Lively in the hand, strong enough to deliver some powerful thrusts, and long enough to reach vitals easy. From what I have witnessed, and granted, I'm no knife fighter, stabs and puncture produce the most fatalities over slices.

A friend of mine, is an EMT and has seen a few things in his day. Even envisoration leaves them alive and kicking.

I tend to keep 230gr Speer Gold Dot hollowpoints, loaded in my 1911, both on and off the pavement, if a gun can't be your first choice, then, a knife would have to be a second. Its a toss up of a knife or a good bo. Man, a 6' long piece of rattan is nothing to be trifled with, and it gives you the advantage of reach, and as far as I can tell, has not been outlawed anywhere.

Just some thoughts.

Knives are tools first, weapons second. I tend to view them that way, but that is simply my opinion.

if you want trainer knives. i know coldsteel makes some.

would be pretty cool to see a kabar training knife, i imagine ontario would make some as well since they supply various military branches.

For disarms, live sparring, or forms? I've trained in a similar system, and can see it for disarms, but IMO any wooden trainer in different styles would work.

For live sparring, the weight of a steel 7 would still do some bludgeoning damage, and would need to be padded, which potentially would throw off the balance, or you'd need padded armor/ protection, which would mean the weapon is balanced, but the unprotected body parts are still game for bludgeoning, unless your sparring buddy and you are using full protection ala kendo.

For forms, maybe some foam or cardboard + duct/ gorilla tape on the edge, with arm protection just in case?

My $0.02 :D

moose I agree that a knife is a last resort weapon... However it it next to imossible to get a handgun permit wear I live.. In fact I;m even required to get a rifle and shotgun permit.. Which took me a year to get. I think if you are a knives esffective range you;ve already done something wrong, butnothing wrong with training to use your tool across a multiple spectrum of utilities. Qeth.. forms mostly although I think an aluminum version would allow for 2 ma interactive drills.

Oh, I agree completely RR, completely. I think that training the mind as well as the body for such scenarios, is paramount. With the proper mental attitude, a rock is pretty viable weapon. But, I like knives.:D

A tool that doubles as a weapon, is more than likely to be on you and at the ready. Training blades for BKT's is a great idea, and very useful for the prepared mind.

Good post, RR, very good.
