No this is not an even remotely interesting thread of me carrying a becker while climbing Mount Everest. Fat chance ha ha. I'm watching family guy , the episode where they climb Mount Everest , looking at my 16 and 7 , and was wondering if anyone ever climbed Mount Everest carrying a becker knife . I think that'd be an awesome photo.

The people that climb Everest, calculate and justify every ounce. I don't think the need for a beefy and heavy fixed blade is great enough to out-weigh (pun intended) the desire to be efficient on the climb.

tradewater is the only person that would climb Everest with a 9.

Would not recommend a large knife climbing. With every step, every once counts. It gets so hard to breath that even with oxygen, you constantly feel like your are going to pass out. Half way up, you'll consider dropping half the items you brought due to the fact that every pound you add on is multiplied as you climb higher and higher. Unless you have a Sherpa to carry your items, I would not bring them

Have some friends who were part of the team that got the first North American woman on Everest (Sharon Wood) as well as attempting serious routes on other 8000 m peaks . They (Barry Blanchard, Jim Elzinga, Mark Twight, etc) would not carry a 9. But they are not Trade.

We call these people "weight weenies" I backpacked 100 miles in the sierras with a big HI blade.... thought nothing of it.

Awesome.

Now go climb EVEREST with the HI, BK9, or any other 9" plus blades and take a few pictures up there with said blade. :D

Hey your no weight weenie right? LOL

Doesn't even have to be Mt. Everest. Anyone on a multiple day backpacking who carries a large knife is a fool unless the location calls for the use of a large knife. But if you can handle the weight and you REALLY want to carry said knife then go for it. A typical rule of thumb is to not carry more than a 3rd of your body weight. A several years ago I was doing a week long trip for the summiting of Mt. Whitney. Between 15-20 miles each day on the route we were going. At the time I weighed 95, 96 pounds. My pack weighed about 45...it was extremely poor judgement for me to go on that trip as it was hell for me. Would not advise to carry extra weight unless you really need to.

Obviously if you are only interested in the climb, then weight must be justified. If you know that you need to process firewood, why....carry on.

I climbed Becker mountain with a small backpack and I thought I was going to die.

If I was physically able to do so, I would definitely climb Everest with my 10. I think that's the minimum legal limit for Yeti fighting. And my 14 around my neck, should be good to go.
