Had some photos to shoot earlier today so I thought I'd give Alayna something to do to keep her occupied...so I checked out the new scales on the BK-2 while I made a fire. I caught some flack for using a lighter for the last fire I made so this time I thought I'd do something a little more challenging and used fatwood and REI storm proof matches :p

Actually I just wanted to get it done, get her occupied, and get back to work..

I really like the look of the new scales.

I really like how they feel too.

Didn't take long at all to go from this.

By the way the BK-14 is a heck of a whittler...

Once the fire was going good...and the stick was cut (no pics there) I was able to get Alayna Occupied for the next hour roasting her first hotdogs over open flames.

Nice pics Mist! Cute kid you got there, and some awesome looking knives!

Mist, there's that &^%$%$# BK-2 again . . . :D These shots you took today are going to be fun to look at when your grandkids come over & you show them what "Mommy" looked like when she was a child . . . Memories, man, that's what life is made of.
Glad to see the food made it back in your excursions, actually was losing a little extra on the last few posts. Great shots, nice looking scales on the knife as well. Thanks for inviting us along once again, great bonding moment with your daughter.
Merry Christmas,
Be safe.

Looks like a good time!

I like how the BK14 sprouted a cord-wrap on the handle between the first feather stick and the second one...

I like the feel with a cord-wrap a lot better.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I like hanging out with Alayna while I work...most of the time, it can get frustrating at times. I was really proud of how well she did with her first hot dogs. I'd write more but I need some rest...been up since 5:00 and it's been a long day.

Yeah, that first fuzz stick was the first thing I did with the knife today, just checking the edge...the second one was to check the feel of the wrap I put on it.

Looks light a good time
I just got micarta on my 7&9. Glad I did it. Changes the feel completely. I also got the Eskabar recently and it's becoming my favorite small FB without regular handles. Great back-up knife.

To me, there is nothing better than sharing the outdoors with your children! It looks like she was really getting into roasting the dogs. Probably won't be too many more years before she's carrying her own BK14!!

Good post man!

Awesome! Looks like a great day

Thanks it was a great day out there with her. I have to be creative in keeping her occupied in order to get any work done when I'm working on projects here at home.

The micarta does really change the feel, and doesn't have any negative effects on the retention. The BK-14 is great, it handles well and cuts like a dream but honestly after handling the BK-11 up at Ethan;s the other day I think I'll like it just as well if not better. I do like the first finger groove a lot and think it will be better under less than perfect circumstances. I have one on the way that is lost somewhere in the USPS system. I may have to just get another one if it doesn't show up after the holidays.

Thanks, I agree. The upside to working so much at home is that I can share more time with my kids...the down side is the distraction, but I usually get past that ok.

I have been working on knife skills with her with some small knives and helping me cook. I always have a smaller knife on me when we go to the woods that is just for her, so no it won't be too long before she is carrying her own. Now I'm wishing I had gotten her to cut the hot dogs up before cooking them but I was busy and then wrapping the only small knife I had out there.

Nice pics. You got my Becker juices stirring again ! I Could pop my Brute micarta onto my 2, but I like my cross hatched Grivory on the smaller guy. I did pop the grips onto it during an internal debate once and it felt VERY good. Nope, I will be patient and do this incrementally. I intend to get another 2 and more Micarta, whenever I can access it conveniently. No rush as winter is long here. I have seen BK-2s on site, stripped and wearing micarta and it was drop dead gorgeous. Someone here described the overall feel, balance and general aesthetics of the 2 as being just right. The longer I own\use one, the more I agree. There is just something about it that makes you want to handle\use this outdoor tool. I'm looking forward to handling the 14 also. Thanks for the pics and good for you to take time for your young lady.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed them.

I am liking the micarta to be sure, but really had no problems with the Grivory...I just like micarta and it is available so...

I agree. I love the size, mass, geometry, and balance of this knife. They come together to form a great combination of abilities in the field.

She and I spend four full days a week together sort of as a team...she is still in training :)

Hey Mist, awesome work! I have a 1 year-old son and I can't WAIT to get him out in the woods and start teaching him the value of independence, self reliance, and woodsmanship! Good stuff!

Thanks guys, I've always enjoyed getting my kids ourside and away from the damned t.v. and video games. We have a lot more fun outside :)

The BK2 is a real deal work horse, huh mist!Great pics of you and your kid out playing!Merry Christmas!

Once again, another awesome post from Mistwalker.

Good job on those fuzz sticks. You and Ruben have that stuff down. I'm unfortunately not in ya'lls league yet. Ruben patiently tried to show me but I've still got work to do.

I guess I've got to get one of those BK2's as well. This site is killing my budget!!!
