Was there ever a BK5 model? If so, is there a pic of it somewhere?
I'm wondering about the numbering system...The "FIVE" seems to be missing!

The BK-5 was the Magnum Camp knife, a Jerry Fisk design. It is now discontinued.

The BK5 was the Magnum Camp. It was discontinued just recently. I can send you a picture if you would like.
fudo, you got me by seconds on that post!:D

Still in my massively correct humble opinion... the BEST Becker there ever was. I'm just darn glad I got mine. It is one of those things you cannot explain... to look at it, ya kinda go hmmmmm. Then, you grab it in your hands, and of course it feels like any other Becker, cause it's got the same handle. Then, you go about cutting stuff with it, and you finally "get it". Let's face it, that Jerry Fisk fella kinda sorta knows how to design a blade.
Mr. Becker, Mr. Fennell, other assorted peoples in power... is there a chance this design will ever come back? I kinda feel sorry for those who do not have one.

I have a bowie with a shorter blade, but the general design is VERY SIMILAR to that! Gee, it makes an EXCELLENT knife for a hunter as the upswept tip gives a good belly for skinning. The BK5 would make an EXCELLENT ADDITION to my collection! :) Looks like I might have to look around for a used one.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, Ethan! Bring these back! :)

Plainsman, I can tell you that the BK-5 is a REALLY good slicer and nicely balanced. I can cleanly cut a water filled plastic two liter bottle in half and leave the bottom standing, with ease. :D

I was recently going through some old magazines, and found a Fall 1995 Cutlery Shoppe catalog. I was admiring the large knife on the cover with the upswept edge, and thought "that looks like a BK5", but then I thought "the blade is uncoated". I then looked at the handle, and thought "well, it has to be a Becker". After looking inside, indeed it was a Becker Magnum Camp, at the time being sold by Blackjack Knives. I then read that the uncoated blade was made from 440-C, and all I could think was "wow"! I'm sure the current 0170-6C is good steel, but I do tend to prefer steel that is relatively stainless. Either way, the Magnum Camp is a cool knife - I think I "need" to find one before they are gone forever!

I have both versions, and they are both great. The Blackjack version is used in the kitchen as a butcher knife when the need arises. It is easy to keep razor sharp with the convex grind and has the power to slice thru frozen meats like warm butter. I am glad that I bought it when I did cause I have not seen another one for sale since.

The BK&T version does duty as my camp knife although I think it would make a wicked fighter as it is extremely light and fast and cuts like a mother. The 0-176C coated blade is relatively corrosion resistant and the easy of sharpening when it needs it makes it a great field carry piece.

Lov'em both!

From my own impressions from magazine reviews and such, I think that the knife was either marketed wrong, or misunderstood. Well, I guess that second point goes back to the first. I read reviews saying that the BK-5 would make a great camp kitchen knife, end of review. Uh... camp kitchen knife? No thanks!

But wait, that isn't what the BK-5 is. It is really a FISK designed upswept bowie. Go look at Jerry Fisk's bowie knives, and you'll see a lot of Fiskiness (sounds like friskiness huh!) in that knife. As people said here, if you want a fast "medium" sized bowie knife that is a wicked slicer, then I hear you ought look no further than the BK-5. That knife sin't just for slicing onions in camp- no, it is a sweet belt knife that can do it all at a great price. Too bad the knife was discontinued. I would love to see it back in production and marketed more as a "Becker" line Fisk, being an inexpensive version of the OVB Fisk bowies. If you don't have the big $$ for the OVB Fisks, you can get the BK-5 version for less money. That sounds like a better marketing plan than talking of the knife as if it were just a carrot cutter.

Was all of that out loud? Jeez, time for bed! G'night all :)

Ok...Just WHY was the BK-5 discontinued???...And just what would it take to get it put BACK into production again???.

I want one!

The BK-5 is an AWESOME knife. It's the knife that's converted me from a small knife in the woods to larger ones. I traded for what I'm pretty sure was the last one available in Alaska. It earned it's keep within a couple days of purchase, as ya' can see indicated in this thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=241297&highlight=drama

Before that little incident I'd used it in the kitchen to cut some onions, bell peppers, cheese, steak and so forth for dinner. It truly is a spectacular knife. It handled the simple kitchen tasks quite well, on top of hacking steel cable in half. I've used it at every opportunity since then, and love it more every day. It does everything from whittling a fire stick to chopping the wood itself quite well. I'd highly recommend to ANYONE considering one of these to GET ONE, even if it is a PITA to track one down. I Don't think they can be beat.....well...unless ya' happen to be one of them folks what thinks knives is for pryin' instead of cuttin'. I'd compared it to a BK-9 before purchase, which is also a very nice knife in it's own right, but it just didn't have the....finesse of the BK-5. One day I'll own all the Beckers, but while I'm on a budget, there's no other one I'd rather have than the Five.

So after all these good words, here are a few left with minor blems (See Camillus sute.) at a really great price. Got one!

For those not familiar, Botach Tactical sometimes has great prices, but they have a very mixed record and reputation for customer service. BUYER BEWARE!!

My experiences buying from them have ranged from very good (product was in stock & shipped right away) to abyssmally horrendous (was TOLD item was in stock and I then pi$$ed away many months leaving them unanswered voicemails and emails until I finally got to them via phone and it finally shipped). FWIW, I no longer do any business with Botach due to their uneven customer service record in my dealings with them.

Do a search in the GB&U here on BFC and other online forums for comments (both good and bad) on their customer service.

The best advice is to call Botach when you order (i.e. order over the phone) and INSURE that what you are ordering is in fact (not just in theory) currently in stock. Many of the problems that people have had with Botach arose when the ordered item wasn't currently "in hand" and got backordered for intractable periods of time.

NOTE: I didn't say "Don't do business with them." I do say to be aware of their historical record of customer service relations before choosing to do business with them.

I have owned two BK5s. But each time after handling it and the BK7 I sold the BK5. I like it, but it's no BK7.
