Becoming a Knife Dealer...how hard?

I know there are a lot of "home based" knife dealers out there and I don't want to step on any toes, but I am interested in starting my own small business. What hurdles can I expect? I don't want to get rich I just want to make my hobby work for me instead of me working for the hobby if you know what I mean. I have had a sucessful small business before, but do I need any "special" permits etc...

Thanks in advance for any info or even criticism! I'd love to hear from those who "tried".

Aloha
John

Hey John:

I guess in one way or another, about everyone who collects, often trades and sometimes sells a knife could call themselves a "knife dealer". I've done those those thing for years. However, it wasn't until I discovered "eBay" that I really feel I can call myself a "knife dealer". In the last 18 months I have sold in excess of 300 knives on eBay all over the country and to several foreign ones. About every day I get these neat little "postal money orders" in the mail and then I take my packages of knives to the PO and mail them out. I guess that is a knife dealer. I've met dozens of great collectors and many of them are repeat buyers who scan my "auctions" every week and are regular buyers. The hardest part is finding a steady and decent supply of knives to sell. I specialize in older and antique knives and have long since sold off all of my excess collection and now have to buy them where ever I can. All told it has turned from a hobby into a pretty lucrative sideline job. It's not hard to visualize taking it to the next level and quitting my "day job". Anyway, eBay is no doubt the easiset way to get started in buying and selling knives and I encourage you to give it a try. Good Luck

Well John, the first thing you need to do is learn to answer your e mail. When people have to wait too long they're apt to do business with someone else. I try to answer all my queries promptly, even If I'm not interested.
