Hello,

I'd like to introduce myself to all of you here. My name is Adam. I'm still in high school but I am becoming very interesting in bladesmithing. I've wanted to make my own sword for a long time but I've just began to research on what it will require.

I have been wondering a few things. First of all, how do you suggest I get started? I've heard it's better to use a grinder at first, rather than forging. Is this true? If so, what grinder do you suggest I purchase?

That's basically all for now. If you have any other tips or suggestions on how I should get started then please feel free to respond. Thank you all in advance.

Adam

read read read! i just got out of highschool and started college and all i can say about starting is i'm very happy that i read for about a year and talked to people about it before i ever met a bladesmith in person and saw the shop. just read a lot and get the basics of start to finish and all of the terminology. then try to find someone in your area. by the way where are you from? most people will suggest a kit knife to start, but if you have a bladesmith in your area skip that and learn what you can. good luck and welcome to bladeforums!

Adam,

I'll second the knife kits idea. They are lots of fun and don't require special tools to get a good working knife.

Another idea is to contact a local blacksmith organization. You can get a lesson for almost free. Most folks in this business are very excited to work with guys your age. Especially ones that are excited, willing to learn, and willing to work!

Got the knife making bug have you?

a sword is a big thing to make,,,,you could, but you might need to sneek up on it by making a few smaller knives.

as for what you will need?...well,,so far I have seen no end of the tools that knife makers can think they need...

You are in school,,so the best advice I have for you is just use a knife from a kit,,,its fast, its all there to do,,,and it will look great when you finish.

a kit knife will still alow you to sand down the handle and this will help you learn about knife making without spending any real money.

Adam, fill in your location. Maybe we can recommend a bladesmith in your area. If you approach one politely, maybe they'll offer you a little tutilage.
