Can anyone on this page give me the skinny on a 2 x 72 belt grinder model 50-1 made in Woodstock, Ontario? Basic unit comes with 2 x 6" platen, 8" serrated contact wheel, 1 1/2 HP singe phase motor(gives about 4000 SFM) and retails for about $1400.00 Canadian. Lots of other bells and whistles for an additional charge(s). Saw one today and a lot of the makers at the CKMG show endorsed it saying it was one of their first serious grinders. I'm probably going to pick one up this week unless I hear any horror stories regarding the grinder from you folks.

Thank you for your input.

I've owned a model 50 (1 HP variable speed) for about 3 years now, and its probably the best money I've ever spent, the only thing I would (and am going to) change is to modify the platen to take thicker bolted on surface ground platens of various lengths. I'd suggest buying the variable speed model if the extra cost isnt that much of an issue, mainly because most single speed grinders tend to run too fast for sanding down most materials, and slowing it WAY down for finishing with the finer grits helps keep from burning the belts out as fast as well as giving your more control. Other then that I think you'll like it a lot

they appear to be a very well made machine, and I must agree with the post above...if you are serious about making quality knives, a variable speed DC motor with controller is a MUST!

Hey Guys....

I seen the same one at the show and was talking to Jim about it...

Was wondering if a motor control would work for something like this ?
