I don't really know much about SOG knives other then the steel they use. I was wondering whats the largest toughest folder they make and if long time users would consider them hard use.

The largest folder in the SOG stable is the new FC-01 'Fatcat folder'. The 4.5" blade is made from VG-10 steel and is TiNi coated. This knife uses the patented Arc-Loc system, and sports Kraton grips. This product will be available in August 2008, with an MSRP of $575.00 USD. Specifications on this knife easily supplant those of the new Tomcat version 3.0 with carbon fiber grips. This knife seems every bit as capable as my "original" Al Mar SERE folder, or a Harsey T3.

But, I would wait until the knife has been thoroughly reviewed in-depth by Tactical Knives in a field test, for a more 'definitive' evaluation. Spencer Frazier's designs are very robust patterns, and a blade costing this much should be able to handle any trouble, or chore with equal aplomb. Remember, this is an MSRP, and will probably drop $200 dollars or more when it saturates the marketplace. I remember the Cold Steel Hatamoto was priced around $400 MSRP, and can now be found for $200 dollars or less. Peace out, Zephyr.

For the money the SOG Vulcan is hard to beat. It is a big robust knife. I bought one when they were first introduced. The Tomcat is similar. I found the Vulcan to be too heavy for EDC for me, and have now EDC the Mini-Vulcan and really like it. Same knife, just a bit smaller. It is still a good handful for me and I highly recommend it. The more expensive Arc-lock knives are great. I just can't justify the cost relative to my use and the fact that I can easily replace the Mini-vulcan should I loose it.

The Vulcan is an excellent knife. I have been using it on a nearly daily basis for around 6 months, and has held up quite nicely. It just needs a good sharpening soon. The VG-10 steel takes a killer edge, the knife rides nice and low in the pocket, and the blade is out in a split second. The Vulcan is a workhorse.
