Been eyeing Fort Turner hawks and thinking of getting the Rogers' Ranger hawk...?

The title pretty much sums it up. I came across Ft. Turner a little over a year ago, bookmarked the site and forgot about it. then I started missing my hawks I sold(custom trailhawk and 2hawks warbeast) so I started browsing and found them again. I don't have(or at least can't think of any at the moment), reasons for a spike hawk but I like the history of Rogers, etc and even with the spike its still a really nice looking piece. I've pretty much decided that it will be on my Xmas list if not a little earlier but if anyone out there owns one, I'd like to hear about it performance and how it feel in the hand. And feel free to post pics of it in action to help cement my decision:D

Wolf's story is like many, many, many (many) other's where they've waited way too long and paid probably way too much for a product that still hasn't arrived.

Holy crap! Thanks for the info. How many times have you contacted them regarding it?

Twice.

I was told it would be shipped to me "shortly".

That was on March 21st of this year. :thumbdn:

H&B has been slammed by orders recently and you'll have a little wait, but at least those folks are honest about it.

Nobody mentioned it but the one I ordered not only did I wait way to long for it. But he over hardened the edge on mine it was chipping. So I ended up sending it back .

Wow, it sucks to hear this.

I ordered a buck tomahawk a year ago. got it in a good amount of time. One bad thing is the axe is really soft, like the edge bends a little if I torque it. It's a shame because otherwise the axe was perfect.

I emailed them about it and they offered to replace it if i sent it in, I forgot about but ah well, glad i didn't, I might not have gotten it back.

Guess i'll look into H&B for my next forged hawk.

Thanks all

Well I took a look at H&B's hawks and they have one with a small spike similar to the Ft. Turner's Rangers hawk. I would just have to do some mods to make it look the same, but hey, that's the fun part:D I'm thinking I'll have to shorten the handle a few inches, decide on what I will use as a handle wrap and then maybe stain it to a darker coco brown color.

They do custom orders, no need to mod a 'hawk. I can imagine it wouldn't cost a whole lot more to have it custom, and it saves you the labor.

Here's a custom (based on some historical originals) H&B made for me. IIRC it cost about $65. I've been a tomahawker for over 30 years and I think this is my ideal tomahawk.

Wolf your hawk pics and mods are just awesome.

How does that H&B compare to your old ATC Roger's Ranger model you fancied up?

There's not much comparison. The H&B is superior in every way. The forging is better, the proportions of weight to haft length is just right. The heat treating is great. The forge-welding of the three layers of steel is very crisp. The grade from the thickness at the haft to the thickness at the cutting edge bevels is just right. EVERY H&B tomahawk I've bought has hast with near-perfect grain alignment and the head-to-haft friction fit is very well done. And with a little work they can be made literally shaving sharp.

The ATC has softer heat treat. The bit is straight but the eye is a little warped. The head is also a little bit heavier and needed a longer 22" haft to balance it better.

Did you see how I fancied up my H&B spontoon spike tomahawk?

Thanks for the detailed response. I've spent a lot of time with my ATC and agree with what you said about it.

I love the looks of that Spontoon. It looks like it is razor sharp too.

It's sharp enough. I haven't messed with the edge much on it. I reckon it would actually do more damage if it wasn't super sharp.

Plus I'll need to made a blade-cover for it first. I don't want that vicious thing hanging from my belt razor sharp without some sort of protection. No sir.

I looked up the ATC Rogers Rangers hawk and it looks great but when I went to their website they only have 3 models listed in their products section and they're all steel tactical hawks. Do they still make the ranger model?

I don't think so. The last I knew, ATC went to having their traditional tomahawks made by Bear Mountain.

Bear Mountain seems to have vanished and I don't know what happened to them.

Justin Gingrich made the traditionals for ATC then they parted ways. Bear Mtn bought that side of the business from Andy Prisco then went out of business themselves.

Most people don't know it but we here at H & B Forge made the hawks for ATC originally. We agreed to not put our stamp on them-why, I don't know. That was my husband's decision and we eventually regretted it. Nevertheless we made many, many hawks for him. Then, when he went out of business, we made several custom designs for Bear Mountain. As you said, they too just vanished. We presently make hawks for Justin Gingrich.
