Been out of the loop awhile--what have I missed?

I was very active on this site when I was in high school, but have used it less frequently since I went to college, A) because I had less time and B) because I could finally afford my own guns, and much of my attention has gone toward building my gun collection.

It has been maybe four years since I really kept up with the world of knives. That is not to say I haven't made any purchases, I am just less aware of trends, new developments in materials and designs, and some of the newer brands on the market. So what have I missed? Can you get me up to date?

The steels that have come out in the last four years are CPM-S30V, ZDP-189, CPM 154 and H-1. There are probably others, but I can't think of any more right now. S-30V is the most popular of these steels, but ZDP-189 is starting to become more widely used. H-1 is a very corrosion/rust resistant steel, and is a great choice for knives that will see a lot of moisture.

I'm not really up on new Brands other than Bradley, Dark-Ops (not a company I take seriously) and Bark River (I don't think they have been around more than four years, but I could be wrong).

Kershaw is a company that seems to be coming out with many new and innovative ideas as of late.

Benchmade seems to be losing the interest of some knifenuts.
Cold Steel has been shunned by some.
Spyderco still going strong from what I can see.

note: I still like the Benchmades that I have, and I have no opinion of Cold Steel, good or bad.

Sure.....

Victorinox or Wenger
Benchmade or Spyderco
Sebenzas are great
Sharpmakers work
D2 is hard for some people to sharpen
Axis locks work
and Schrade closed.

That about covers it! :D

And Buck moved their factory from California to Coeur d'Alene, ID.
.....May they start making autos........

I thought it was Post Falls, Idaho?

The autos would be cool though...a FACTORY auto 110!

Semantics. Pretty much suburbs of each other. They're about 9 miles apart, and more people know of Cd'Alene.

But yeah, a nice Buck auto, good steel, pretty wood scales or what ever..... I'm waiting/hoping. :D

BTW: Haven't AO's been introduced in the last 4 years or so...?

Should "Are Sebenzas worth the price" be on your list or does that question pre date 4 years?

Heat treat is still an issue.

i.e. - S30V, does it chip because it is the worst steel since surgical stainless or because of faulty heat treat or sharpening?

I read about the Journal piece and wrote a letter to them. Schrade closed?

But CAMILLUS??? The makers of Becker and CUDA??? Holy carp, I'm goinb to have to buy up the knives I like.

Now that’s an understatement. Several people have done their worst. Sticking the knife in a jar of salt water for a month or two, add vinegar/other nasty things, and no rust. The most to happen is laser etching on the blade seems to make the logo rust, but that’s it.
I definitely suggest you pick up some of the Spyderco Salt knives.

H1 is rust proof...to even the most extreme users
ZDP is the new "miracle metal" and Spyderco/Kershaw/William Henry have been making really nice knives out of it

BM chopped their G10/AXIS line 90%. (no more TSEK/AFCK/710HS (only avail in D2 now)/ARES)

The old standby classic Spyderco Endura/Delica have been upgraded
