Been playing with the HOGFSH....

Didn't work very hard today, spent some time playing with my new FSH. I put a rather steep angle for the edge, on a edgepro I used the very steepest angle and made it a little more for a micro bevel. I have now hunted pigs with it, chopped quite a bit of tree and foliage, cooked dinner with it several nights and general use.

I find that while it doesn't feel that sharp, it will easily shave and cut anything I put it to. So I found some big bamboo patches today and went to slicing.

For a long while I had absolutly no issues with chopping/slicing thru any of it. By the time I started to get worn out from 2.5 LBS of blade, it was finally beginning to drag thru the bamboo. I got out my ceramic rod and lightly ran it over the blade and could feel some very slight areas where it was worn, but hardly at all. After half a dozen runs of this, the knife was shaving sharp again and would slice easily thru the banboo again.

So my questions are is this the normal to expect or did I get lucky, and how many of you actually use the big knifes for the intended purposes.

With my GW I often have an issue with it staying very sharp, and I was beginning to become irritated with it. I think that I will increase the angle on it as well to see if it remains sharper longer like the HOGFSH.

Still new at the high end of knives, so I am having fun playing.

I think it's normal... Busse are made to use.

I tell myself that, and I do use some, and fondle and sell others... one of the benefits/drawbacks to Busse is that you can't try before you buy - or for me - feel before you buy... SO, I've bought plenty, sold a few, and kept some.

I wish that I had found the HOGFSH first. My SHSH is my favorite, and I use that one every chance I get. I was attempting to split an oak log, and the blade glanced off of the wood, and into a granite chunk of the fire ring. I was concerned, but I was able to straighten the roll, yes, roll of the edge with the back of my non-Busse folder - steeled it straight again. Now it has character, and I know INFI is tougher than I need, but just as tough as I want.

Oh yeah, you have to post pics of the blades - especially field use. Some of us appreciate that... :D

Here a couple of my favorites right now...

Wirenut, It's great to hear about blades getting used and even funner to be the person actually using them. But pics are definitely needed. ;)

Rat-30, that's a great pic! I just got your SHSH's twin and can't wait to put it to work!

:D

Here are a few of the Standard FSH with Magnum Handles after a little brush clearing and limb trimming after a storm this Spring.

The bottom two pics are after a little bath in the kitchen sink. I think the black crinkle is one of the toughest of the coatings.

Troy-

What's the deal with all the rats scarfing up the SHSHs? No more cheese for you. I think you're officially on slop only from now on!

Beat it baby, Beat it! :foot:

I'm not kidding, when I was chopping at that log, it was dark. The blade glanced off this aged oak log, and a spark flew from the granite when I 'engaged' it... The SHSH never faltered... ;)

I thought the SHSH wouldn't get used when I bought it, but then I realized just how special it is... and what the reputation of Busse is based on - So I started giving her some 'character', and she replies with laughter... oh, The Precious...

Hey Brother - I'm a Rat in name only... well, ok, I did start with the Busse Gateway knife, and I'm keeping my original Howling Rat (it helped me dig my car out of a high-center off-road adventure - It's special), but I got here as quickly and as large as my meager means allows...:D

Time for an upgrade - how about "HOG-30"???

I'm still looking for some INFI that can compete with my Ratweiler. This SH2 just may give it a run!

Aw, come on, guys...them's fightin' words. Put up yer dukes, someone. Anyone?

Personally, I'm hoping your misguided ratness will lead you to believe the Ratweiler is better and then you'll unload the SHSH to me cheap.

Here, Here - send that worthless SHSHII here!!!!

A ratweiler is a good trainer for a SHSH - makes you appreciate the SHSH just that much more... I know, I've owned several ratweilers, and none now...;) (tugtugtug)

Yep, yep. You're fully reformed. Darn you, piglet. Grrrr.

(Sorry Rat, I forgot about your mission. I almost blew your cover. Continue with plan "Infestation" )

Rat-30 you going to the spirit of steel show? I will be. After all of the use I 400 grit the blade and 00 steel wooled it, still has some Kydex scratches in it, but it is a user, although I still like it to look pretty sometimes.

I'm finding, that after investing time and $ into several ways af sharpening, then feeling I've found my "new" favorite way of sharpening, 400 wet/dry or fine emory cloth is what I return to almost every time. I'm working on my 5th sheet for polishing my ST Ripper. A steel rod and sandpaper is what's kept my HH going through .5 acre of brush clearing (and rock chopping:eek: ), and a lot of campfire wood splitting.

360, my HH has officially given the "I fart in your general direction" taunt to your RW.;) He's got an attitude (just like my kids, I don't know where they get it)!

:D :D :D :D :D

My somewhat customized FSH is becoming a favorite...

Once I get some pants knocked together, field testing should pick up :D

Hmmm....well, other than the downward turn of the HH's handle and the saber grind, the only major design difference that leaps out at me is the fact that mine is bigger.

;)

Great to see some Busses being used chaps.

I must admit I havent used my HH but I have certainly put my MR through some work with splitting, chopping, scraping and slicing around the house, the kitchen and out in the field.
