about selling a few of my knives and buying a high quality folder such as a sebenza or sng or somthing similar. I would definately need to sell some knives to afford one at those prices. I guess the question is, do you think I should sell some knives (sere, chinook, ect.) to buy one; and, will I finally be satisfied with the one "top of the line" knife that I choose?

Also, while I'm thinkin about it, I've handled both a sebenza and a few strtiders that were new. They were both rough on the openning. The strider was actually hard to open. I trust that they will be broken in to a smooth glide after a few days/weeks of playin with them. -True? Thanks.

IMO, you should not sell your knives to buy a different knife. Save up and buy it at the end of the year, and keep your current knives too.

No, you will never be satisfied with a single high-quality knife, even if you buy the absolute 'best'. There will always be something 'better' next year. :)

Best Wishes,
-Bob

My $0.02 would be to chose wisely in what custom or high-end production knife you buy before selling off your collection.

IMO, most knife-nuts will never be satisfied with just "one". You'd be better of just not buying any normal production blades and then purchasing that one custom.

While there are guys here who have done what you propose, I'd suggest that most of them own more than one high-end folder; or they also own several production folders.

My Sebenzas started out stiff but smooth, but with regular use over several months "broke in" beautifully. They are now extremely easy to open.

Whether you should sell your current knives depends on how much you like them and whether they would continue to be useful to you after you get something like an SnG or Sebbie.

I recently sold some knives that I liked, but after having them a while I didn't use them. The proceeds went to the purchase of a fizzed Sebbie. I have no regrets.

I would advise you to sell ONLY the knives that you don't care for anymore for whatever reason. If you sell knives that you still like, you will most likely just want to buy them again if you are like me. I have found that even though I DO own a Sebenza and a Strider or two, I still like having my other pieces around ( Benchmade, Emerson, Spyderco, etc...)

So, just save the money until; you can buy what you want.

Good Luck!

my local sporting goods shop has a used CRK Sebbie (the "In God We Trust silver one with blue stars) for $400, it's in near mint condition

out of curiosity, i looked at it, even though it was far out of my price range, and....

...about to forward an unpopular opinion here, putting on Nomex flame-proof jumpsuit....

i didn't see what the big deal was, yes, it was a nice knife, smooth and sharp, comfortable, but not $400 worth.... in all honesty, i saw no *functional* difference between it and my Chinook, they're both a nice, solid, sharpened chunk of steel, but i just don't understand why a Sebbie is worth $400

i saw no functional difference between it, a Benchmade Griptilian, or a Spyderco Millitary/Paramillitary, and the latter knives are far more affordable than the Sebbie....

it must be that "luxury" thing i'll never understand, why pay extra for useless cosmetic frippery that adds *nothing* to performance, makes no sense, if a $120 knife is as durable, cuts as well, and holds an edge as well as a $400 knife, why buy the $400 knife, must be for the bragging rights

i honestly don't understand that mindset, i mean a Chevy Suburban and a Cadillac Escalade are essentially the *same thing*, the Escalade is a Suburban with a lot of useless cosmetic crap that drives up the price and adds *nothing* to performance...

Honestly, the sebenza is a nice, even great, knife but Im don't think it's worth it. I good used one for about half the price is fine I think.

Try a search with the word Sebenza. Please.
These points about the Sebenza's worth have been beat to de....aah screw it.

Who has the popcorn.........:)

It's a personal thing. Some people appreciate the difference, some don't need it. If you think a Sebenza is overpriced and a Benchmade is good enough, then a Benchmade is probably overpriced, too. Buy an M-Tech.

Of course, we also have people here who legitimately feel a Sebenza isn't good enough, and are willing to spend a couple hundred more to get a true custom.

That's why the knife business is booming. We all like what we like, and there's no explaining a preference to someone who doesn't share it.

thats sorta how i see things if im spending 300+$ i might as well go full custom and have something real different
butch

Well, as far as selling knives goes, I do it. And have regretted it in some cases.

But, I sell due to volume. Once a high enough number is reached (I just feel it), it's time to divest.

Selling for money (I've done this also), is a necessity driven thing, not for new buys.

As regards Sebbies, if it trips your trigger and you want it (and have the funds), go for it. After all, it's not like most knife purchases are a needed item (thank goodness).

I'd chime in to agree with most people here. You won't be happy with just one high end folder. As for selling your existing knives, that's a personal thing. If its something that's hard to get, then I'd be reluctant to part with it. If its just a prodo that you got "just because," then you may want to go for it. I have one knife- ONE- that would cause me to sell my collection to get it. I would be happy with it, but then again I don't like change that much.

Sebenza vs. SNG:

I'll say this, I think they're closer than a lot of people want to admit. I've had 3 different Sebenzas, and they just didn't do it for me. Nice folder, but not unique enough to be worth the $. I got a Mike Obenauf model 2 straight up for my last Sebenza. I LOVED that knife. It had the fit and finish of a fine automobile. The SNG is more of an SUV type thing (and not talking escalade). Its a great knife that will do a LOT for you. My first Strider will be a GB, but that's because I want something with tip strength. I carry a Buck/Strider mini-tanto and its VERY nice, so I can't imagine the full Strider would be any LESS of a knife.

Bottom line, if its not something that's in limited edition or supply (and Striders and Sebenzas are ANYTHING but a limited item), I'd be inclined to follow what others have said and just save up. Besides, half the fun of collecting is deciding what you should get next.

Well, i definately appreciate what every one's had to say. I've gotta point out that I would be keeping some of my knives (not selling them all) though. My 2 afcks and my mini socom I don't think I'd ever sell. I'm thinkin more of just cutting down my knife collection. I love some of my knives, but some of em are just good knives. I appreciate them, but could stand to see them go...I think.

Here's what I did:
I sold off a lot of my collection for Busses because they were folders that I never used, or at least not much. I only kept around 20% of my folders. So prioritize, but I recommend that you NOT sell off the ones you use. You'll miss them!

I enjoy selling & trading my knives, so I can get something that I REALLY want!! I have 3 Chris Reeves knives, that were all acquired through trading/selling!! And soon, I will have an Umfaan!! As well as my R.Hinderer Fireatc. So, if you want to sell some of your knives to buy something else, I say DO it!! As a side note, I used to have over 200 knives, and I decided to sell the majority off, so I can focus on Customs!!
