After that post Kevin made a while ago re: Unibroue's "Maudite" beer, when I saw it at my local Trader Joe's I just had to get a bottle. Drank it with the roommate last night. Yummy! Even the roommate, who does NOT like beer at all, had to admit that she liked this one. I may pick up a thing of "La Fin Du Monde" tonight.

Anyone else made any fun new beer discoveries lately? Any cool beer recommendations? I have been in a "black & tan" rut forever and need some inspiration. :D

Race Rocks Amber Ale by Lighthouse is my usualy but latley I have really been liking the Backhand of God stout by Crannog ales.

I'm not sure if either of these are available off of vancouver island.

Well I am kind of at the mercy of what the grocery store keeps on hand. They tend to keep about 30 or so micro brews or specialty beers on hand that rotate every so often, so the wife and I always try to try a new one when possible.
While not a "seasonal" beer fan, I do have to admit that I have enjoyed both the Sam Adams Winter Lager as well as Blue Moon's version. The Blue Moon is really good. Lots of complex flavor. I'm not usually a big fan of BM being more of a Guinness man myself, but this Winter offering is pretty dang tasty:p ;)

If you ever see any offerings by a company called Victory, check it out. Their Hopdevil IPA is killer. Most of their offerings are first rate. Ditto goes for Troegs or Weyerbacher. All PA brewed, PA is enjoying a first rate brewpub and microwbrew renaisance.

Luengling's (pronounced ling-ling) It's a Pennsylvania brew that has been around for a long time, it's only recently been introduced into northern New York. Bottled is good, but the local burger joint has it on tap, it is my latest favorite.

It's Yuengling, but it is sort of pronounced that way. They have a good black and tan. I've toured their brewery in Pottsville. About an hour from me. Oldest brewery in the USA.

Dixie Beer Company, near Abita Springs Louisianna is good.

Bridgeport is another good one. They make my favorite pale ale.

Here in Atlanta we've got Dogwood. Great brewery!

Give those a shot.

That Y at the front is drawn in such a way that you think the artist might have had too many before putting pen to paper. It is almost a Rorshach inkblot. I've heard it pronounced about a million different ways. I didn't know for sure until I was at the brewery and got it straight from the source. It's good beer though.

Nova?

Pyramid Apricot. It should be available in your area.

I drink the hell out of Yeungling when I'm back east but I've never seen it around here. I class it with Weinhardt's here: pretty much regional and somewhere between micros and domestics in terms of quality, but closer to domestics in price. Good value.

EDIT: I'm forgetting a few. Too much sampling, I suppose.

Most of Rogue's stuff is pretty good and is fairly widespread around here. Probably the best beer they've ever offered IMNSHO is the Morimoto Chestnut Brown Ale. Outstanding beyond mere words, but it only seems to appear now and then. Everything in the Morimoto line is good, but beware the Imperial Stout unless you have some experience with darker beers.

I'm partial to stouts, and oatmeal stouts in particular. If you find this to your liking, Young's is pretty good and is easy to find. If you enjoy a good black-and-tan you'll probably enjoy this. It's not a beverage, it's a snack.

Newcastle was one of my early favorites and I still enjoy it, although it seems to taste better on tap. Good luck finding it on tap. (If you do, let me know where.)

Mac and Jack's African Amber is on tap at most bars that I've been to around here -- they don't bottle it. If the bar has this, this is usually what I stick with. You'll have to go out to get it.

If you like hefeweizens, Widemer Bro's is very good and is easy to find in this area. The lemon wedge is not required but is recommended. Their Milk Stout (seasonal beer, available now) is also very good if you like a thick, heavy, cloying stout.

Silver City Brewery is our local microbrewery and produces some excellent beer. I see it in some stores around here. I would not be surprised if it's available across the water. Stay away from the McFarlane's and the Whoopass IPA if you have anything planned for the next day. Their hef is superb. It's better on tap at the source, of course (and I can walk home if I get carried away), but it's worth trying in the bottled form as well.

You can't imagine how many times I got drunk on Unibroue :P

As a Quebecer, I tried all of them. The "Blanche de Chambly" can easily compete with known white beer as Hoegaarden (Ho garden?)

A "Trois Pistole" is enough to get you advanced. MY first blackout was the result of one of those + 3 Buds.

I love good beer. And whatever you say, Quebec's beer is great. Unibroue is not the best, we have a lot of "microbrasseries", try to find beers from "La Barberie" (wich will be nearly impossible :( )

They have an interresting concept: The Carousel. There are always 8 sorts of beer availible, and you can get them all at once :) The equivalent of 3 pints for 15$ (can).

Or the "Griffon Rousse" from McAuslan.

Or some classics:
Guinness
Stella Artois

Thanks guys, I am making lists. Don't think I've heard of Victory, Troegs, Weyerbacher, Dixie, or Dogwood. I've heard of, but have never tried Yuengling and Sam Adams. I've never heard of Blue Moon (it is the name of a great dive-y bar in my neighborhood, but I'm guessing that's not the source). I did not know about the Apricot -- I'll have to check it out the next time I'm at the Pyramid Alehouse (I'm actually kind of stunned that I've never noticed it before). I remember liking the Rogue Morimoto offerings the last time I tried some in Portland, but don't remember which ones I had. Guess I'll have to sample them all again. The horror... :D

cybrok, just to make sure -- "The Carousel" is a sampler, right? Not some kind of "boot of mystery blend" thing? It sounds dangerous if it's the latter. I hold my liquor surprisingly well, but at up to 9%, I need to be careful with these Canadian beers. ;)

I am partial to dark ale, porter, and stout (I went to Dublin mostly just to do the Guinness brewery tour) but also like a good bitter, lager, lambic or hefeweizen, so keep 'em coming.

The hard part is to drink it before the beer gets warm.

oh how i wish i liked beer. believe me i have tried really hard. i've drank all sorts of beer and though i found some to be okay, i don't enjoy it on a level that my friends and peers do.

i see them really really enjoying their beer. i get envious.

the best beer that i've managed to enjoy are the ice beers. i can't quite drink the lighter tasting stuff. labatt blue was probably the most hideous beer i have ever tried to drink.

corona is smooth. those honey brown lagers/cream ales are okay. i wanted to like guiness, but just can't drink it.

my choice of drink... scotch. nothing beats the taste of scotch. in fact...

for normal drinking I drink shiner bock ... probably wont find it out of texas tho.

I also enjoy Sierra Nevada Pale Ale ... its good but not for drinking while eating... the food makes it taste really bitter

and I really enjoy the mendocino brewery black hawk stout... really good stuff, all their beer has a bird name and bird on the label, so its easy to find them at your favorite beer place.

I'm not much of a beer drinker, mainly Miller Lite. But I do enjoy Hornsby's Amber Draft Hard Cider (just got back from town with some).

Bob

All the Unibroue stuff is great, and we recently had Cranberry Ephemere & Maudite on tap at my work that I could drink for free. :) (I work at a beer distributor)

The Terrible is fantastic. I tried the Quelque Chose the other day and it is awesome as well. Unibroue is now my favorite brewery.
