Perhaps one benefit will be a nee for less heat upstairs during the winter since all the forges will be running everyday downstairs.

Another thing that I would bet on is that _No_ building permits are required, how about building codes?

Brick and mortar outside walls -- sometimes inside, too, or cement. Wood in almost never used except for window and door frames. Even kitchen cabinets and coungters are often formed concrete with wood (or no!) doors. I am not sure how they partitioned off the second floor. Looks like they used corrugated steel for roof.

No code, no permit -- just toss it up. There is both good and bad in this.
