This is a Kuhn knife I picked up for $5 at a local Antique show (guy wouldn't budge to $4). Never heard of Kuhn before and don't know anything about it. Liked the hook blade, wanted a Wharncliffe blade with constant curve to it as a main blade. First time modifying a slipjoint, first time working with Micarta (left it unpolished on purpose for more grip), first time making a nail nick- slipped with the Dremmel (damn legs). Hidden pins, white liner, red micarta (Canadian colours). Only thing I did wrong was not clamp down the master pin enough so there is a bit of wobble to the blade but still walks and talks well. Now just have to work a bit more on the hawksbill blade.

What do you guys like/ dislike about it??

I like your alteration to the broken blade.

But I preferred the natural handle and nickel-silver bolsters over the plastic. That horn may have been broken and useless, but it sure was pretty...

Have you considered adding your own signature or makers mark to the knife? That would be a nice touch.

Bob- I like natural materials too but the horn was rotten in layers and was nasty to hold, plus the bolsters were loose; and I LOVE red, so I had to have a good red knife, plus not much micarta on slipjoints and I needed an excuse to use Micarta before putting it on my groomsmen's knives. I was just thinking of going downstairs and adding my chop to the scales. Not too sure if I want to put the "Black Tyr Knives" stamp on the knife as I did not make the knife but it would identify that I did the mods. I'll think about it more and listen to what others here say.

Now the blade can never be tightened. The horn could have easily been repaired with super glue.
But if you like it, it's fine with me!

Fine job but why not stay with the Barehead style?

Unsure what you mean by the barehead style (I am guessing one bolster)?
the horn crumbled as I took it off so I think that I made the right choice removing it, plus the bolsters were not even with the scales thickness wise, so even if I kept the scales it was uncomfortable to hold. Just curious if more would like it if it was not Micarta?? It is holding up well carrying it daily so far, and it was meant to be a time consumer more than anything, so it was worth it to me, at least until I get my custom version when I graduate Massage Therapy school in 2 years.

Thanks for the input so far!

I like it. Nice job on the main blade and I like the new scales. They definitely take away much of the traditional look, but look nice and are probably practical. Reminds me of a SAK. My suggestion is that since you have altered the knife so much and modernized it anyway, I would clean and polish up the blades, too. Give it a full refurb. If you want them toned, do an even toning. It just looks grungy to me like it is.

very nice looking mods.

i agree on cleaning off and then giving an even patina to the blades, for a cleaner, more finished look. i think it will go much better with the updated scales.

looks like a good job...

as for a mark...is there any way that you could modify your mark? that way you could have one mark for knives you modded, and one mark for knives you made. i have seen a custom maker do that, but used different marks for forged vs stock removal.

I think if you only mark the scale and the maker has a mark on the tang, then there should be no confusion about who made what. I could see a mark or initials branded onto the scale on this knife. But on the other hand, it also might mess up a very clean look. I would probably leave it alone.

I think I will mark it with my chop and not the makers stamp I have. Where would you guys suggest putting it on (it is a teardrop design)?

I doubt anyone would think the scales original. There is no need to mark it.

great eye - I don't think many would consider that knife salvageable.
A little work on the unusual hawkbill blade and you've got a fine edc.
