Before I crank up the forge......

do I need to remove the rust from the steel cable I scavenged? I am going at my first try of cable damascus - have the 20 Mule team Borax, hammer and anvil and good forge and about 20 feet of steel cable. If so how do I do it. ( I mean remove the rust not forge the damascus)

Q 2. I have the drive chain from a garage door opener. they make knives outta Harley chain - can I make damascus from this chain? If so I probably oughta remove as much grease and grime as possible.Right?
