the knowledge and understanding about the CS lockback strength?

I have many of their products, but was told that linerlocks were much stronger - I want to know if that is true or not?

hey Pesh,
I've owned both and the only one I've had fail was a linerlock... twice: a liner lock can fail if the knife gets twisted in your grip, thus pushing the locking bar out of the engaged position.. which happened to me. The liner lock can also fail if it's not properly engaging the blade... which happened to me, but it was a new knife and the maker remedied the problem before it ever became a problem.

I've never had a lock back fail, but I've never abused one to the point of failure.. and I really hadn't abused the liner lock, either, it was just a little too exposed and would unlock when twisted in my hand.

Personally, I think they are both good basic locking systems, and if done properly, won't fail until you've really gone beyond the limits of normal use.

Course, the point in having a knife is for those moments when you may exceed "normal" use... like cutting your way out of an inverted semi, cutting your arm off to save your life or prying a jammed minigun loose while being shot at... All situations where a folder would probably fail.

I've watched Lynn's ads for some time, and I own a few of the early Cold Steel tantos... I just never really liked the style of his folders, but I do think his knives are extremely ruggedly built. Personally, I've used liner locks, back locks, Axis locks and several other kinds of locking folders... Under normal use, you'd be hard pressed to find one that failed under any but the most extreme circumstances.

You can also do a search here on that very question, as you're not the first to ask it, nor will you be the last!

BTW: welcome to the forums from another Washingtonian!

I think the reason it was moved is because AET is now banned. That is he started a bunch of threads and some of those may have gootten moved because of the content.

all of the locks must meet some accepted level of compententcy, or the liabilities would be too great for the manufacturers. Having been a knifenut living out here in the sticks, there have not been many sources to get balanced answers. I too have CS's, more than I care to admit, but it seemed like a love it or hate it relationship with the other knife guys I could find. I have been very happy with all of my buys; just in the last year trying other makers - Kershaw and CRK&T. Have already bought too many of those. CRK&T's quality has been a disapointment though....blade grinds mislocated(PESH), grind angles too steep (Crawford/Kaspers - both), dull blades ( one of the pair of Crawford/Kaspers). If they could get the blade grinds right I would be thrilled - but instead I might trade them off. That is four knives in less than a month - that hurts.

JoeShredd - good to know another soggy person is on the site; someone who knows where Enumclaw is...

Ya shoulda been at the Northwest Knife Collectors Show this past weekend in Puyallup! All the knives you'd want to look at/buy and more. Questions we saw aplenty and there were a myriad of answers. Custom makers, knife supplies and retailers abounded - heck, I even had a table for the first time... Man, it was an awesome two day event.. Keep your eyes open for threads on local shows and remember that there will be another NWKC show in Puyallup in October, I believe... and it'll be a lot bigger! Hope to see y'all there!
