Another large field knife in D2. I get requests for this size knife in D2 but I haven't actually put a larger D2 knife to any rugged outdoor use yet. For those of you that are outdoor adventurers, have you used knives in D2 of this size catagory in the field? This one is 3/16" thick by 1 1/2" wide, 6 1/2" blade with a convex grind. I feel it would do well because of the grind and blade thickness. Thanks

Looks good Scott; I really like convex grinds, I think they're about the best for performance and maintenance. I know Dozier makes some larger knives in D2, plus Ontario's RAT comes in D2...but I've heard mixed reviews. I think heat-treat is a big factor. I've put my Dozier blades (smaller ones) through their paces, everything except heavy prying or digging, and they've held up well. I've always found D2 is easy for me to get scary sharp.

I don't think I'd go beyond 6-6.5" for the blade, just knowing D2 characteristics...it's not a major chopping blade, I'll stick with A2 or some other high-carbon big knife for heavy chopping.

I like 3/16" as well, I'll leave my larger blades at 1/4" to take the heavy chopping/prying abuse and do most of my cutting with a good thin blade...preferably convex :D

Rock it sounds like we're on the same page. I've been using 5160 for my large, 7" and above blades but I'm also going to be using 1/4" A2. I like the fact I can get A2 cryo treated where cryo doesn't benefit 5160. Thanks for the reply.
