I ran into knifemaker Todd Begg and his wife Tanya at the OKCA Show in Eugene, OR, two shows ago... For some strange reason that year, I was drawn to the recurve blade... I actually bought two different recurves at that show, but I have to share Todd's version with y'all... 'cause if you saw my Jason Cutter Red Deer Stag utility recently, I proffessed a hesitancy towards getting any stag... well, this was my first piece! And Todd had a mate to it that I almost got instead (and which I bought later at our own NWKC Show last October!), but the recurve really jumped out at me! This is, IIR, ATS-34, around 7" long with (IIR) Sambar stag slabs with a distal tapered tang, too... Man, it just fits! :D And if Todd sees this, it would be great if he could add anything I may have forgotten...

It's got a stag handle. That means it has to be nice, right? :D

At one time recurves really appealed to me, but that is no longer the case. This knife does look very well made, and I would imagine that there are plenty of people that will find it to be an exceptionally nice looking knife. Gotta love that stag though.

I have never gotten tired of stag. That knife is a well done design and the fit and finish is top notch. Todd makes some fine knives.

I not only like Todd's knives, I am also watching his development and the way he has been executing some very innovative techniques and profiles.

I recall that reverse curve fighter was in the 2003 KNIVES picture-book. Its a good one and even better in colour. (The book was B&W.) Jason.

I kinda stumbled to this thread and noticed you were talkin about one of my knives!!! COOL!!

Joe, I'm happy you got both stagg handle knives, they belong together and I think they make a nice presentation.I bought that stagg over five years ago before I ever went to a knife show and I didn't even know how to work it when I purchased it. I personally think I left the slabs too thick, but I guess it worked out ok.
I did like that stagg piece alot, it is one of my earlier knives but I still love the re-curve look. The bolsters and pins are 416ss.
The finish is hand mirror polished to 4000 Grit. I remember at the Oregon show the re-curve seemed to be made for your hand, Joe...the knife fit your hand perfectly which I thought was pretty cool.

Joe, check your P.M.

As Jason has pointed out, I am not making full tang, bolster style construction anymore....my knives are evolving and I am fine tuning my own unique look and construction.

Todd

He's too modest to say anything, but he's won awards two years in a row in Eugene. The first was for Best New Maker with a cool push dagger, and last year in a different category, for... I forget which style knife. Was it this one?

Actually I didn't win anything this year at Eugene....I didn't get a chance to enter any knives. We got there late friday after the submission deadline(long story, but I was working on the last knife till about 11am fri.) On a positive note....I did sell out, took a ton of orders and got invited back East to a newly forming knife production company......can't beat that with a stick!!

:D :D

I did win Best Fantasy at the Vegas Classic 03, which is what might have thrown you RaRanny. Thanks, anyway, I appreciate all of your comments.:)

Whoops, my mistake. Yes, the fantasy, that's the one.
