I'm still very much a beginner knife maker. The 4 knives that i've made were all eiter from leafsprings, precut blanks, plow dishes or saw blades.
I really want to start making some knives from actual steel stock. However, I only have easy access to 3mm thick stock, to get 4mm or other will be much more expensive in my case. And since I just want to experiment a little for now, I'm not looking to spend a fortune.
My question is thus; is 3mm thick enough? I mainly want to make edc knives, but have no idea what the regulations are.

3mm is plenty thick enough for an EDC blade. You can't pry open ammo boxes, but for general everyday use it is fine. Most of the blades I make (skinners, EDC, hunters), up to 6", are .125" or less.

Welcome to Shop Talk. Filling out your profile with location and some info about yourself will help us help you. There might be a knifemaker in your town that will offer to help you learn.

The stickys are full of info, and the custom search engine ( in the stickys) will find previous threads on any subject.

Knife steel is not just any steel. There are many suppliers of the right types with known quality and assay. USA Knifemakers, New Jersey Steel Baron, etc.
You will quickly learn that the cost of the steel is the smallest cost of knifemaking. A good starting steel is 1080 or 1084. Cheap and easy to HT.

I prefer 2-2.5mm for edc knives. It’s a knife, not a prybar.
