Beginner Kit Video

I put together a video geared towards beginner bushcrafters that may be reading this site, wondering how on earth they will ever get to be bushcrafters with all the expensive gear they have to buy...

Even though this forum is always very helpful towards new members, and not at all elitist with gear, it is easy for a beginner to get intimidated with all of the higher end gear that people post up.

This video shows some cheap or free basic gear that will get a young and/or inexperienced person started.

Any suggestions for a follow up video, or for a video showing the next step of equipment are welcome. I am looking for equipment that a person would probably already have around the house that can be repurposed, or that can be bought at common local stores for cheap.

Nice video.

I think it serves as a reminder of what Bushcraft is about - the ability to improvise with what is available.

Simon,

Great stuff. Bushcraft has never been about expensive gear, has it? Actually, I think there is inverse relationship, the periods in my life that I have had the most money to spend on high-tech-gear have also been the periods where I have not had time to be in the woods...

Good stuff Simon! I like the 'doing it on the cheap' threads. I think that's good advice for beginners. I posted a thread a while back on getting setup using just free stuff. You could also try breaking things down for cheap shelter material or home made water filters, like Pict made. Garbage bags, cheap blue tarps, etc for shelters.

Coffee cans make excellent billy pots as well.

That video was great for me. I'm not a bushcrafter, although I spend lots of time outdoors and think I might be able to survive maybe if I'm lucky, but seeing what a basic kit includes is very handy. Guess I don't have to wait to be a survivalist until I can afford that Busse.

I'd love to see follow-ups that use those basic implements (not "here's a kitchen knife, but when I make the fuzz stick I'm using a custom knife worth as much as your house" :) to do the basic skills: firestarting, shelter building, cooking, basic traps.

Excellent Simon. I think it even has value as a reminder when not-so-new bushcrafters/outdoorsmen get caught up in the "newer and cooler" thing every once in a while. I know I sometimes lose track of the point of it all, while acquiring this or that cool piece of gear. Especially, like mneedham, when I don't have a lot of time to get out.

Great video

Really shows what going out and having fun is all about. I also agree with mneedham, I have the "fancy stuff" but not the time to go out and use it.

Excellent, Simon. I agree with the other guys about remembering what it is all about.

Nice video, also nice to mention that you can learn bushcraft skills in your own backyard. For follow up, you could show how to use the tools in this video to actually make fire, make a shelter and such.

Good job on the video. When I was a kid all my rig was repurposed gear that I made or found around the house. I had a bunch of the little items stored in a fish food container, very handy.
Next Video, maybe a demo on how to set up a tarp as a shelter, maybe do it in a park, maybe a couple different configurations..
Annother on safely setting up a small campfire, clear space around, rocks for containment, gathering up tender before trying to start burning stuff.

Excellent way to get younger people out in the woods more. You don't need the expensive gear to have a good time in the bush.

Nice vid.

Awesome video Simon. You really explained the basic gear in a straight-forward manner. You should make more as they are very informative and you do a good job with your cuts and edits.

Nice video. You really can put an edge on anything metal can't you? /points to the last wood slabbed folder in the video

Repurposed! I love that word. I finally finished building my shop after 2 1/2 years and then I got to organizing all my stuff. My wife wondered where all her tupperware containers went. Of course, I repurposed them into a nuts and bolts rack with everything organized. She got over it after a week or so. Great word and great video.

I've often thought of taking a trip to a local Target or WalMart and seeing if I could put together a basic kit and see what the cost might be, assuming I developed a list and a set of rules ahead of time. Good vid.

Have you ever done any sharpening videos? Something like sharpening knives for dummies. Yes, I speak of myself, no one else

I have a few basic sharpening videos on my account, which you can access by clicking the video. This will take you to the video as it is on youtube, where you can click my name (luv2sharpen), which will take you to a page where all of my videos are available for viewing. They are some of the first videos. Hope they help! The videos on knivesshipfree.com are excellent, if you are looking for other videos.
