I am putting together a sheath making kit for my husband's christmas present and I have a few questions and if anyone has additional advice on anything else I might need to add to the kit please let me know. I am willing to pay a little extra for quality if it means that the tools and/or material last a while and he gets a lot of good use out of them.

Here is the preliminary list for the kit that I need to buy at a knife supply store-

-rivet eyelet flaring die
-sheath making foam
-Kydex sheeting
-rivets

From my preliminary research I read that Kydex is more pliable when heated but that holstex is more durable. I figured that I would get the kydex since it seems easier to work with. Does anyone have thought on this?

As for the flaring die. So far all I am finding that is a good compromise for dies is the CKK guides plus dies however it seems pretty expensive for what it is and I haven't heard for good reviews on it.

I vaguely remember my husband saying that he would make his own press so that he isn't constricted by the size of the Kydex presses and it would be cheaper. Thoughts? In addition when I was looking at the foam, knifekits.com has bundles you can buy that seem like a good deal or should I just get a sheet of thermal form molding foam?

Thank you for your help!

I'll let the kydex guys help you with specifics.
BTW, Your hubby is a lucky guy.

I will move this to the sheath forum where it will get more and better answers.

Thank You Stacy! :) Allrighty, where's our kydex gurus?

I don't have a lot to add, unfortunately. What I can say is that I really don't care for the hand setter that I bought. I grabbed the least expensive set because I don't plan on doing much plastic bending. The size may be incorrect for the hardware I bought, but even so, if you're hubby is going to set more than a couple of eyelets I suggest looking at something better. I ruined a bunch of eyelets and had to deal with getting them out of the plastic. This may not be anyone else's experience, not sure. All I know is that I'd have coughed up the ching for a better tool if I were to do it again.

Good luck and I'm sure he'll be happy. :)

Look up Ronnie Hale at HaleStorm Kydex. Tell him Brian sent you. He can get you straightened out on everything you need to know. And I bet he'd even give your husband some pointers. He's good people.
