OK I'll start:

What hand tools should I purchase (first, then later on; which are the most imporant)?

I'd like to make classic fixed blade hunters and utility knives. Stock removal. Full tang mostly. In the Loveless/Hendrix tradition.

I recently asked Spencer Stewart the same question via e-mail and this is the list he gave me, which I'm in the process of collecting. So far all I have is the book, which is great.

How to Make Knives by Barney and Loveless
1 Nicholson round file -- 10"
1 Nicholson Mill Bastard file, single cut -- 12 or 14" long
1 Nicholson Mill file, double cut 10"
1 set of six Nicholson needle files for detail work
1 file card (a must)
1 walmart brand half round 10"-- advice, stick with Nicholson!
1 Nicholson Square file --12"
1 sturdy hacksaw frame and some blades from Walmart, these will work.
Assorted wet/dry sandpaper from Walmart (3M) ranging through 150, 220, 350,
400, 600, 800, 1000
one borrowed workbench with a vise (a must!)
1 scribe

For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23

I would add an electric drill or even better a drill press to drill pin holes in the tang.

Afterwards the sky is the limit but that is not necessary to get started. One of the well recognized Canadian makers Wolfegang Loerchner, three time winner of the Cronk? award at the Knifemaker's Guild show works exclusively with files to shape his knives.

Hmmm.... Dry Heat, were you wanting to do the FAQ? I would be glad to let you if you want. The questions I had were kind of preliminary...I think Darrel was right on with the first question: What type of knife should be the first (easiest) for me to make? What type of tang? etc. Your answer was pretty good. Let me know.

BTW, I'm still working on a good set of questions. I will post them Monday or Tuesday.
