Behind a few cobwebs in the corner of the garage...

Hey guys,
I usually lurk in the general knife forum but meandered over here after my wife gave me the task of getting a small hatchet for her brother for car camping (Xmas present). I ended up ordering him a X7 but over the weekend I was visiting my parents and decided to ask them if any of my old hatchets were still around (remembering that I had a few that looked a lot like eastwigs). Well, no luck on the small hatchet department but he brought out this axe that had been sitting in the corner of the garage for at least the last 25 years. Best I can tell it's a Norlund Boy's Axe that has never been used (overall height is about 24 1/2 inches). No rust and still has orange tape covering the top of the blade. I didn't even bother to wipe it up before taking the snaps but I always enjoy these kind of stories so I figured I'd share. I don't know much about axe's but reading around here makes me think a boys axe like this should be a good user around the campsite. Cheers.

Nice find. Guys go nuts over the Norlunds. First one I have seen with yellow handle - I like it.

That's awesome. Nice find.

It looks like it's a hybrid, half boy's axe, half Hudson Bay. It's a handy size and length and the sheath makes it safer to transport.

I never knew Norlund made any axes but Hudson's Bays. That size ought to be great for car-camping. If you really want to let it go.
It will be a conversation piece and object of envy for whoever has it.

I would't use it!
Those like that go for a 'permium price' on ebay, especially one that has never been used! Save and gently re-glue the paper lable onto the axe.
It's your axe, but I wouldn't use it if I were you. It's worth too much $ the way it is IMO. You have a collectors piece there :)

I've got three Norlunds, two small hatchets and a small double bit. They are great axes!
I recently saw an ad for them in an old (late 80's?) S.I.R mail order catalog, at the time they were under $20 Canadian.
I'll have to see if i can scan the ad and post it here.
When did Norlund go out of business?

I also have the same one. Yellow handle and all. Although, I had to rehang it as the o.g. haft was pretty rotted out. Anyway, awesome find! I really like mine.

They were a house and contract brand of the Mann Edged Tool Co. , who also continued the Collins name, and lots of other axe brands well into just a few years ago. Here is a good article on them , showing the different stamps, styles, etc....... -

One thing not mentioned, is that Mann/Norlund also sold a skinning knife for a few years that was possibly contracted through Ontario Knife Co. It was a standard upswept skinner, stamped on handle, with a leather sheath added.
