Behind The Scenes @ Fiddleback Forge

Just a friendly reminder these knives are for “Preview” not “Pre-sale”.

Early Monday morning Cody gets started w/ the 1st glue-up of the week

After the drilling process Cody will takes the rectangular scales and make them look like a knife handle.

These knives are set up for us to sand the “fronts” and “tops”. We do this prior to glue-up to lower the chance of having the bevels scratched.

more to come as time permits!!! Hope you enjoyed it.

Some great shots in there Phillip! It is always neat to see the process of how these amazing tools come to life. Thanks for sharing.

This Bush Hermit looks like it will turn out very nice.

I have a question for you about the spalting. On this knife and several others in the last week or two, the spalting splatter pattern seems more linear and "spider-web like" than the normal "roundish ink-blot pattern" we usually see. Are you guys refining your spalting technique or are these examples just unusual occurrences? I ask because I really like this different pattern better.

It could be a couple of things.
I believe Allen has been messing around w/ the process & I have been more involved in it as well. I have no idea which ones I have done or the blades Allen has been tinkering with perhaps he could provide better insight.

cue Allen here

***Warning...Allen does not have as much fun as we do playing this in the shop***

On another note
per our discussion yesterday
The bullesye holes on the patterns are randomly placed. So I might try your overlay pictures w/ pre-drilled blanks.

Nice preview! Man I am digging the new fighter model. can't wait to see one of those finished, I'm going to need one :)

I also really love Allen's metal bolstered knives. One day I am going to get that Helmsman he and I discussed at Blade in 2014 lol

The Osage Lone Star looks great! Allen's Helmsman and Quartermaster are awesome!

Is that a 4x8 sheet of 1/2" plate for a bench top????? Sorry, I have a thing for a good workbench.

it is indeed.
Thanks for the preview Phillip. Some very nice blades in the works!!
thanks Abe

it is indeed.

In 2007 and 2008, right before the mass layoff in this area when the housing bubble busted, I worked in sheet metal fabrication. W worked with 4x8 and 4x12 sheets. I am sooooo glad we seldom worked with anything thicker than 3/16 :)

today is the day that the famous "blue tip" gets removed and the final grinds are done.

Here Andy has dipped the blade to cool it off and checking his progress. He blows the water off after each dip.

I can't stop looking at these and imagining them in different configurations. I think I am going to have to have one...

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this new pattern turns out too.

The Fiddleback Fighter and the BSS are two of my favorite Fiddleback designs.

The BSS especially has wonderful handle ergonomics and the ~4-3/8" to ~4 1/2" blade length is a nice size for personal carry. Works great with a Rick Lowe cross draw sheath. ;)

I spy another Bourbon Street Skinner in the works... :)

I think in the right thickness, it will actually be thee Fiddleback that gives me every attribute I want in a full sized belt knife in the field.

People give me crap about my liking of "stabby" blades, but lol, just try performing a minor surgery on your own calf to remove an embedded honey locust thorn, with a deep bellied skinning knife just once and you will understand my fondness for pointy blades :) Plus the fin points work great for fine work and making trap components.

I have never owned one, but I do like the BSS. I have handled them. I think over all I will like this more though. Definitely one in the works. Impossible to miss those guys.
