I've got and order in for a Behring Made knife! It's forged 440c, the only information I can find on forging 440c says-
a. It's not worth doing.
b. Forging ruins the steel.
c. 440c steel is crap..
Does anyone have any experience with Behring Made 440c, or seen any reviews or cutting tests? I really like the style, but need stainless for a variety of reasons.
Opinions? Worth the money or Inferior steel?

440C is an excellent blade steel. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. Properly heat treated it takes an excellent edge and polishes up beautifully!

With the right heat treatment 440c is fine. Recommend cryo.

Most mass produced 440c is soft and don't hold an edge. It's cheap and plenty of it in China

When are they actually using 440c in china ?
When is the steel on such knives actually what they say it is ?

1) It's a Behring knife. They make great knives. Stop worrying about it.

2) When did 440C become, as you put it, "inferior"? Did I miss the "These are the sexy steels this week that you must buy" memo from the Marketing Department?

Good to hear it!
Ha ha, no I just read that forging 440C ruins it and I don't know too much about Behring (or 440c) so I wanted some info. :-)
I'm not usually much of a snob, but it's an expensive knife!

Forging 440C incorrectly will ruin it.
A company like Behring is definitely set up to forge it properly.

Its knifemakers that just give it a try without the proper equipment that have trouble with it and then say its crap.

Steels are only as good as their heat treat. 440c is absolutely awesome with the right heat treat, but it's been my personal experience that's become a very rare thing. Hence why searching for it might yield results indicating the steel sucks. If you are keen on buying a knife on 440c, verify the maker's expertise with the steel.

I bought two new custom knives with 440C (~60RC) within the last two years, one with a high polish. I have three Boye knives in cast 440C, one also custom and a Ronnie Foster in it. The steel performs well and looks great. Whether hard or soft, it doesn't chip like some other steel. The exception being cast 440C which can chip on hard edge impact (steel on steel). Two customs of mine have hit something hard (glass and concrete) with the tip, neither chipped, both painlessly restored. The Benchmade and Boker I have in 440C are very good as well.

Thanks for the input everyone!
That's not the exact knife I'm getting- it's O1 and hollow ground. I ordered 440c (the only stainless they offer, I assume because it can be forged.) and convex. I can't wait to see what I get, I'm a little picky about stag, and I really like what's in the picture. I'll post when I get the knife.
Brownshoe- I've been looking at the Spyderco Serrata- it looks really cool! It's cast 440c I was curious about it also.

I haven't seen the Serrata. I will say that Boye dendritic 440C really does continue to cut after it gets dull to your finger. It appears to have the "micro serrations" that is claimed. I have a Boye Basic 2 and 3 and a folder all in dendritic 440C. The two Basics are regularly used in the kitchen for at least 15 years now. I've had the pocket knife for a little longer. I can't say enough about how great David Boye's pocket knife is. I think its the best pocket knife package when you take all the design elements together and it cuts great.

I'd like to have the Serrata, and almost got one when the price dropped. But too many knives, too little money and I've already got 3 Boyes :)
