Being a one knife guy

I have not had very much luck at all on being what I call a "one knife type of guy". On July 18th I purchased a Case chesnut bone Peanut with the intent on only carrying that knife for many years to come. My intent on doing this was, I think that always carrying the same knife would make things alot simpler, and I just really like the look of a genuinely pocket worn knife. I did alright at first, but by now I have switched from the Peanut to a Buck 110, to a Case Stockman, and to a Case Sodbuster. And now as I am typing this I have the Chestnut Bone Peanut in my pocket :D. Don't get me wrong, in the three months that I've owned this knife it has received more pocket time then probably any of my other knives, but I still switch every now and then. Anyone else have this problem?

I've had some limited success for the last 5 1/2 months with my gifted damascus peanut. I can say that I've carried it almost everyday since I got it, but it still gets augmented now and then by my Vic bantam. But not all that often. I stuck the bantam in my pocket if I knew I was going to be dealing with screws or lots of imported beer like at backyard BBQ's. But after I carried it, I realized that I could have delt with the screws with my Sear's keychain screw driver, and beers opened with my house key, so it got bumped again. My almost constant companions have been my keyring classic and peanut. Maybe 98% of the time. I think in the near future I may be down to just the classic and bantam. More and more, I've been adapting to the way my dad did it. If the peanut is going to be too small, I'll just carry a small sheath knife. For most of the time, a two inch blade is enough, and the only time I think I need more is when Karen and I go canoeing or woods rambling. So in my day pack/boat bag is a Buck 102 woodsman and a folding saw.

Sitting here right now, I have the classic in it's keyring sheath and the peanut in my pocket. Nothing else has been carried for the past week or more. I don't see any change coming soon. So, to sum it up, I'm down to two regular edc knives.

I think by virtue of us being here on a knife forum, does not bode well to being a one knife man!

Carl.

I've done it but always end up falling off the wagon eventually and start getting that itch for something new (even if it's just a variation of the pattern I'm carrying at the time).

for along time i carried just one knife. One knife for years. Never had just one knife since i was a kid because i would periodically lose them. But i would carry one (almost always a sak of some sort) and carry it everyday until i would lose it and buy another one.

that being said, about the time i discovered this forum i caught the bug and now i rotate, my normal edc is a buck 309 but today for example, for some reason i had an urge to carry my Wenger SI. Now tomorrow I will put the buck 309 back in my pocket, but i cant seem to just stick with just one day in and day out anymore

its probably a sickness :p

I have a Vic Classic on my key chain that is always there. I have a Case Stockman in my pocket that is there most of the time (sometimes it is replaced by a Peanut for a day or so). Sometimes I have a third knife in a back pocket. For a while it was a Griptilian, then it was a Vantage Pro, then it was a Baconmaker and now it is a Slimline Trapper. Next it will be a Case Trapperlock with a pocket clip when they come out in November. So, I can see myself becoming a three knife guy here pretty quick and they will all be traditional type knives of some sort and usually carried at the same time.

I carried a Case medium stockman (3318) for years and years. When my children where young I just couldn't afford to be spending on knives. It served almost any need I could immagine. Now I usually have 2 knives on me at any given time, own everything from neckers to sheath and CV to S30V etc. and can't fatham carying the same knife every day! I must admitt that I have a very soft spot still for the traditonal folder.

This don't even count the ones I have "put up" that I just fondle everyonce and a while to make me feel better.:o

I still switch around, but mostly carry a Case Jr Scout or Vic Cadet, sometimes +a stockman for extra blades. And have the 58mm Rambler on keychain. I am nowhere near close as I have a lot of slippies I like, but i haven't added any new knives in 3 or 4 months... does that count? :) If I know I am going to be outdoors hiking camping, etc, will bring a different setup - maybe fixed blade and farmer (but will still have the 58mm Rambler). Trying to figure out how to part with some of the slippies I like a lot, but really don't need. Guess I'm still at the point of sorting through the various patterns. Would like to settle on a couple, and only keep a spare or two of the absolute favorites... Will get there at some point (hopefully). In reality, i guess that would mean quitting the collecting hobby, probably the right thing for me to do, but hard to swallow at this point. But the pendulum is starting to swing in that direction, not just with knives. Carl has mentioned that "load lightening is liberating" many times. I have no doubt you are right, Carl, I just have to get there. Just me - others may be at a different point in their " knife journey"...

Sorry for "Rambling" (pun intended)
Peace
Fred

That's because you're a "knife guy". The "one knife type of guy" you speak of is the kind of person that isn't really into knives, just a regular guy who wants something to cut with. He doesn't get all hung up about whether or not it has the greatest steel or fancy scales, he just wants it to be reliable, affordable, and useful. The other thing he has going for him is that it's probably the only knife he owns. That would make it much easier to stick with the same one.

As "knife guys" we are interested in every little detail concerning design, materials, and craftsmanship. This leads us to want to try out different kinds of knives from a variety of makers. Inevitably we will like more than one specific knife, and I see no reason to limit myself to just one when there are so many to choose from.

It's not a problem that I have, because I don't consider it to be a problem.:D

I seem to have this problem even worse when I go hunting. Sometimes I'll have a Buck 110 in my backpocket with a stockman in the front, or I might have a Peanut instead of the stockman. And of course, I just found my Mora Clipper in an old hunting bag, so I might replace the Buck 110 with the Clipper.........

That's a really good perspective on it. This might sound dumb but I never thought about it that way. I think you just cleared this whole topic up for me, I'm going to carry whatever the heck I want, and be happy about it :D

Sometimes I think that I have too many knives because I tend to gravitate to only a few. I thought I was making some headway thining the heard by three only to realize that I had aquired six in the space of about two months
The problem is, I keep finding more and more that I like. That's not a bad thing IMO.

Glad I could help.

I buy new knives all the time thinking that they will be the new ultimate EDC, but 29 of 30 days I grab my brown Endura4

As I have collected more really nice knives I find it even harder to carry just one. I'm just about to the point of being hopeless.

A week is about as long as I can carry any knife. I look in my knife cases, or see a great picture on the forum that strikes a memory of something else I have, and before you know it I'm digging something different out. "Man oh man, I forgot how much I like this one!" It goes in the pocket for a few days or a week, until the whole cycle starts over again.

Yes, I'm a Knife Slut. :o ;)

I bought the peanut also some time ago, and while it gets the most pocket time, i do change it sometimes with a medium stockman. And on my keys there is always a vic rambler. When i go outdoors, ill have my izula or an f1, and a farmer. So far ive done good like this, but i do want more peanuts and want to try more traditional patterns.
I still use my 'older' bigger knives at home, be it folders or fixed blades, but they don't get carried anymore. For how long..we'll see..but for now im more than happy with the small case peanut in my pocket. Love how it slices through things, .. it even has a patina forming :D

I never really wanted to be a "one knife guy" but I very much like the idea of having the same constant companion for many years. I also like the idea of rotating knives so I found a happy medium. The best of both worlds, so to speak.

I have carried the same knife everyday for the last 9 months in my watch pocket. I carry and rotate a second knife which rides just below it in my right front pocket.

I must admit that for the first few months it was hard to stick with the same knife even though I rotate the second knife. Now that several months have passed, I wouldn't have it any other way.

If you want to be a one knife guy, I have five words for you......
STOP COMING ON THIS SITE!!!
It's evil.
It's horrible.
It is full of beautiful pictures, amazing stories, and a folksy feel.
How are you EVER going to resist the urge to carry or get more knives if you have to deal with that?
LOL.
To answer your question, yes, I have that problem as well. Like JK, my constant companion is my Classic. Right now I have my Bonestag Peanut in my left front pocket. Sometimes it's my Buck Canoe, or my Buck Cadet, or my Vic Recruit, Cadet, Wenger SI, etc. It becomes a part of my day, waking up, taking care of my morning bathroom duties, getting dressed, and picking out a knife for the day. We are knife nuts. We are exempt from the "one knife" rule, I guess. I look at it more as being a "preferred knife" guy, as in I prefer to carry my Peanut, and it is my go to knife, the one people will usually see me with, but occassionally they can expect to see me with something else, knowing all along that it is temporary.

Again, I find it refreshing to see how people get a different view on things.. :)
Personally, I'm lowering down my 'collection' of folders to five. At this very moment, I only have four (the fifth one will be my first American multibladed traditional). I do choose daily among those four, and honestly, I assume I could get by just with one.
I don't really think that someone who just owns and uses one knife isn't a knife guy. Sure he isn't a knife collector at all, but he is a knife guy: he owns a knife, carries it, and uses it for cutting things...isn't that the way it's supposed to be?
As everyone on this forum, I love looking at knives, handling them, appreciating them, discovering them, even wishing for them. But I have been a collector years ago (not of knives), and I know that collecting is not for me. Maybe if I was very rich I would chase makers for new customs...or maybe I wouldn't. I know how I am. And at times I envy some collectors, for the beauties they have acquired. But in the end, I prefer growing my collection of visa stamps on my passport  , and getting away with a handful of knives (a SAK, a small gents lockback, an Opinel and a traditional Sardinian friction folder). I'm fine with that.
Maybe someday I will save some money, choose a pattern and a maker, and get a custom knife. Sure I would like to, and maybe that would become my only knife. But not for now. As Fred said, I guess I'm down the road to becoming a 'one knife guy', but ain't got there yet...
