Howdy folks.
I haven't lurked, posted, etc on this site in a LONG TIME.

Life has taken me over.
I just recently moved out of my parents house, to my own house.
(I'm 20).
Bills, my job, and my hot-rod have been owning me lately.
The last month or so I've been doing nothing but shooting, riding my Harley, bowling (that's new for me) and working on my hot-rod.
(A 1989 Dodge D-150 with a 440 stroker. 505ci race-gas, for those who may be interested. Drag truck. Mucho doleros. :D)
I'm digressing. Oops. :)
So what does this have to do with knives?

It goes like this.
I've been so sidetracked with other things lately, that I just throw whatever I've been carrying normally into my pocket.
Lately, it's been a bone-stock Griptilian with 154cm.
And it works. Maybe a touch-up once a week or so or a tightening here-and-there, but it works.
Oh, I still foldle it and take a knife-guy look of happiness at it, but I'm.......content.

I feel like I've been ditching this site in favor of looking up motors or guns, and yet here I am.

Anyone else been through this? I still love knives and follow all sorts of knife stuff on other "media sites" but I guess my tastes are shifting.

Please tell me I'm not the only one going through this.

You're the only one going through this...

But in all seriousness, collecting knives is mostly a hobby for me (and a lot of us). Hobby interest has ebbs and flows, just like anything in life.

Life's priorities take charge of you and we drift in and out of our hobbies. It's normal.

Take firearms..... Historically I would buy 5-10 guns a year or at least one every couple of months on average. The recent ammo shortage has pretty much killed my interest and I have not moved back into shooting a lot since ammo has become more plentiful. I don't miss this or I would be out shooting today. It is really a pretty day here, maybe a little windy for bench shooting.... I do other stuff that I like.

Maybe consider yourself lucky? I know I spend a lot of time around here. Sounds like you're having fun with other things. You're young as well, so who knows what your interests will be 5/10/20 years on.

Hey Bladeboss,
Yeah, I can relate. There's a thread over on the General Knife Discussion area about how we all make money for knives. I think I'm in the minority in that I have a lot of interests/vices, including making cocktails, raw denim jeans, going out to dinner, writing, flashlights, etc. The more interests you have, the less time and money there is for knives.
Right now, I only have four knives that I carry. Beyond that I have 2 opinels, a case knife, and 3 fixed blades. So...yeah, not a big collection.
However, I can totally relate to your feelings of content. When I carry one of these four, they all get the job done and I genuinely appreciate the craft and construction of each. It's a nice feeling :D
That being said, I have 2-3 knives on the radar to buy over the course of the next year, but I think loving the knives you have is always better than just lusting after ones you don't.
Nice thread!

We do this stuff in order to feel good, and to distract ourselves from our jobs at Home Depot and the reality that we will never walk on the moon. When knives - or whatever - no longer do that for us, we move to something that does.

I have gone through guns, knives, MTs, SAKs, flashlights, Maxpedition bags and general prepping/survival. Right now I am pretty much into MTs, to the exclusion of most other things.

I am in the same boat. For a few years I was really into knives and especially Himalayan Import kukris. But I started to just be an accumulator of knives and didn't really ever use them and started to lose interest. I still have an interest, but haven't bought a new knife in a while. Let all my subscriptions expire.

I still really like this site, however, and feel like I am part of the community. So even if you aren't as into it still stop by to get information and engage in usually pretty good interaction with people with similar interests.

It sounds like a well rounded life to me. I am entering metal detecting season soon, and I go hard with that. The wife and I go fishing, camping etc. I also find myself at a saturation point once again with cutting tools. Just how many axes and hawks etc. does a guy need ? 3?, 5?......I likely have about 10 or more. Yes the focus of this site is a hobby/interest to me. But many of us have multiple and diverse, yet often correlated, areas of interest.

Thanks for the replies folks!
Who knows, maybe I'll buy a new knife sometime and it will fire back up for me again.

You never know. I've had lots of hobbies that I really enjoyed for a long time that I completely lost interest in and others that I pursue avidly for a couple of years, then lose interest in, then come back to later. And I honestly never know which is which until it happens.

Yes, hobbies wax and wane. For me, though, knife accumulating never goes off the front burner. I blame this site, for all it's discussions, announcements, photo-ops and bragging that goes on. It's my favorite place to hang out, and I am constantly feeding my interest in new and sharp things.

I sometimes wish I could be content with what I have, and with the exception of knives, I believe I am. I'm okay with that.

Some of my other hobbies/collections include silver bullion art rounds or coins and Playing cards (you'd be amazed at the artistic stuff out there!).

Maybe you'll never walk on the moon.
Me, I ain't giving up that easily. :)

It might be when I'm almost dead and require maxing out 15 credit cards and consigning my body to science, but I plan on making it there. :D

We all go through different phases in our lives. At different ages, different things are priorities. You sound like a responsible young man, which is an amazing thing, and good for you. Enjoy your life. Content is a GOOD thing, it is what we all strive to be. Remember that.

Life is short, and the older you get, the faster it will go. I didn't think so, when I was your age.

I am at the point where stuff doesn't matter. Family matter, love matters, the things that matter, can not be bought with with money.I don't need much to make me happy, or to make me content.

Thank you for starting this thread. :)

I saw a little craft sign at a flea market, one of those people make to hang in your kitchen or den. It said:
"Life Gets In The Way Of Living"
You are describing what that means. We get busy with life. Life gets busy with us. You mention your car a lot of times in your initial post, not so much your knife. That means your attention has been diverted. I noticed you didn't mention a girlfriend. If it hadn't already happened, she will show up and when she does you'll mention her a lot more than the car. :D

Guess I am alone.
Thanks to those who replied. :)

Don't worry BB, you are in a transition phase. I remember when you first showed up, I was one of the first people to interact with you. When I moved out at around 18 years old. It was a new experience and then the reality of my newly modified life hit me. I made the best of it, but I never lost sight of the small things in life that made me happy. Collecting knives was not really one at the time, I only had a couple knives back then. One was a Spyderco Delica combo edge, Buck 119, a red machete with plastic handles and a bulls head on it (wish I knew the manufacturer), and a small stockman from Case. Thought it all, I got into cars, music, motorcycles/ATVs, girls of course, partying, concerts, and other stuff that is done at that age. You're going to notice these changes even more as you get older. Don't be a stranger and remember you can come back and check in, say hello, show off a new knife/gun, car, whatever anytime you want. I wish you the best, just don't drop off the map completely. THis is much more than a knife forum, remember that.

Ha! My biggest distraction from knives was girls. Now that I've got a permanent one I'm much more focused. ;)

Always liked and used knives. But it wasn't until I was well into life (30's) when I really started buying and playing. It was fun. That is when the pile started to grow.

Being content is a good thing. But strive to improve yourself in all ways. Content is good, but you stagnate sometimes. But some like that comfortable place in life.

As the spring weather encroaches I'm on here less and less... more time outside cleaning, clearing, cutting, and soon I'll be opening the pool, and where I once played modified softball, I quit to focus now on teaching my son how to play baseball...

I'm content with my knife collection for now, maybe I'll add one or two more through the summer mos. If something really catches my eye or i hit big on a scratch-off, but mostly, I'll be enjoying using the ones I got out in the sun, road trips, cookouts, (just bought 5 tickets to a Sept. Orioles game, a few rows from the field behind first base), and likely much less time on the forums, So I totally understand... other interests also take time and money, and I have many other interests alongside knives...

When the cold air starts to creep in though, and the pool is closed and the leaves are raked, there's a good chance I'll be getting back on frequently to pass the time, and looking to expand the collection...

Thank you for the kind words!
I'll still be around. I'm not gonna go delete my account or anything. :)
